When Dana Callahan, a junior
human resources and family science
major, was dating her ex-boyfriend,
she lived in Kearney while he lived in
Lincoln.
She said e-mail kept her phone bill

“I felt as if we could become clos
i er,” she said. “Sometimes it is just eas
ier to express yourself by writing.”

Alcohol bill voted down;
wording called too vague

entity who or which sells, gives away,
disposes of, exchanges, delivers, suf
fers or permits the sale, gift or
procuring of any alcoholic liquor to
or for any person less than 21 years
of age” liable for injury, death or
damage caused by the consumption
of alcohol.
Lincoln Attorney Herb Friedman
said the legislation would have
struck at the source of the alcohol.
“It places the responsibility on
those people who break the law,” he
said.

“By virtue of being adults, we are
accountable for the actions of
minors,” she said. “We do have the
responsibility as adults to give a
good example, and we don’t always
do that”.
But Mary Campbell, who spoke
for the Nebraska Beer Wholesalers
Association, said the bill could lead
to any number of people being
responsible - perhaps, she said jok
ingly, even the farmer who grew the
barley.
“This does get to be a ridiculous
line of liability,” she said.
Kathy Siefken of the Nebraska
Retail Grocers Association agreed.
“It opens things up,” she said,
“and it takes responsibility away
from the minors.”
