’99 migration to be in Missouri
By Kim Sweet
Staff writer
Students choosing to follow the
Husker football team to the annual
migration game next year will find
themselves in Columbia, Mo.
ASUN passed a bill on
Wednesday night to designate the
Sept. 25, 1999, football game against
the University of Missouri as the stu
dent migration game.
With games against Kansas, Iowa
and Colorado as possibilities the
Association of Students of the
University of Nebraska President
Sara Russell said she chose Missouri
after considering location, distance
and dates of the games.
Russell said all the factors are
important considerations in choosing
the migration game.
While Russell said Colorado
would be a great game with a premier
location, the weekend of
Thanksgiving presents a problem in
attracting students.
The long tradition of going to the
University of Kansas in Lawrence for
the migration game was also a con
sideration. But Russell said in the
end, the prospect of a better game
against a better Missouri team won
over.
Because games in Kansas are typ
ically easier to obtain tickets to,
Russell said she hoped the Missouri
game would give students a way to
get to more away games.
“It seems a little easier to obtain
KU tickets if they really have a desire
to go,” Russell said.
“The migration game is here to
provide a little more accessibility to a
game.”
Russell said 20 percent of the
tickets allocated to the University of
Nebraska-Lincoln would be allocated
to students for the migration game.
After voting quickly on the fate of
the migration game, ASUN moved
into debate over a bill that would back
lobbying efforts against LB 126.
The bill in the Nebraska
Unicameral proposes to suspend the
driver’s license of and fine a minor
who is found in possession of alco
hol.
Shelley Stall, director of Student
Legal Services, came before the sen
ate to express her support for the
ASUN bill opposing LB 126.
The loss of a college student’s
license, if the bill passed, could have
severe consequences - even forcing a
student to drop out of college, Stall
said.
“I think this is going to affect stu
dents who have to work to stay in
school,” Stall said.
Speaker Matt Boyd said he could
sympathize with students who are
reliant on their cars to work and fund
their education.
“My parents don’t pay my
tuition,” Boyd said. “This bill could
hurt students like me out there.”
Graduate Studies Senator Jason
Boykin said he disagreed with
ASUN’s bill.
“If we’re going to stand behind
some of the things we do - the Laura
Cockson Memorial Scholarship, the
Robert Wood (Foundation anti-binge
drinking grant) - we need to take a
stand on stricter penalties,” Boykin
said.
Public Affairs and Community
Service Senator Kristen Wehner said
she disagreed with LB126 because of
the unfairness of some of the amend
ments attached to it.
Weiner said requiring a blood
alcohol test on the sole basis of the
appearance of a minor being drunk -
something she said the bill could
require - would be an infringement of
one’s rights.
Weiner said the law would end up
discriminating in the end.
“They’re not going to use this law
widely,” Weiner said. “They’re going
to use this law to their discretion.”
The senate voted to table the bill
and sent it to the communications
committee before considering it fur
ther.
