Blue Barn’s Viewings’ examines life after death By Diane Broderick Staff writer The Blue Barn’s newest play takes a nontraditional look at a tra I ditional topic - death. “Three Viewings,” written by Jeffrey Matcher, examines the lives oi tnree cnar acters affected by three differ ent deaths. It is told in an unusual way: through three mono logues and wi th only three actors. Kevin La wler, the play's director and an employee at the Blue Barn, said the entire piay taxes piace in a ivnawestern funeral parlor during the same weekend around Christmas. But the characters aren’t exact ly involved with each other. “None of the three characters really talk about the other charac ters, but they're all interconnected because they’re in the same small town,” he said. The challenge of being an actor without dialogue seems daunting, but actor Steve Tipton said that it actually helps in some cases. Tipton plays Emil, the funeral parlor’s director. “It's easy to learn because it's strictly you talking. It makes it easy to memorize,” Tipton said. But the difficulty, he said, lies in not having someone up on stage to help with your lines if you flub them. “It’s tougher to perform, easier to learn,” Tipton said. Lawler said he chose the play because he was interested in Hatcher's work. “It's not often today that you come across a writer of such talent that as the play progresses, your I__ laughter or tears or whatever you re feeling as an audience member begins to have a weight of recogni tion,” Lawler said. The combined sorrow and humor bring it very close to real life, he said, but also pose chal lenges to its production. “It's a different sty le of theater than what we call a straight play, because the characters are talking dir ectly to the audience, so there’s a need to create a rap port with the audience,” Lawler said. But Tipton believes that it improves the play, by bring ing the audi ence closer anu making it a part ot the action. It also gives the actors more room to do things they normally can't. “The actors are telling the peo ple in the room a story about them selves. It’s OK (for the actors) to react to their laughter. Looking at the audience in the eyes is even per missible in something like this,” he said. Each of the three sections of the play has its own theme about deal ing with life after someone’s death. But the story doesn’t get trapped in the macabre and maudlin. Tipton said. Death is the catalyst of the monologues, but the play functions as a comedy as well as a drama in its account of reopening one’s eyes to life after tragedy. Almost schizophrenic in its composition, Tipton reaffirms the serious nature of the piece. “I wouldn’t say it’s a light evening of theater. It's a thinking play,” he said. “It’s kind of geared toward the human heart, not the funny bone.” Theatre Prewiew The Facts ^ What: “Three Viewings” Where: Blue Barn Theatre, 614 S 11th St, Omaha When: Jan. 28 through Feb. 21 Cost: $12 for adults $10 for students and seniors The Skinny: Play examines aftermath of death The happy Mediums take stage By Josh Krauter Staff writer Lincoln pop-punk band The Mediums have put a few new spins on promoting their music to the public. Along with the usual concerts, radio promotions and locally produced albums, band members James Schaflfner (guitar), Mark Anderson (drums) and Tim Moran (bass) have used classrooms, 1980s hair bands and embarrassing situations with rock stars to make themselves known. While backstage at a Garbage show in Chicago, Schaflfner was introduced to singer Shirley Manson. “James shook her hand and she spilled coffee on her self,” Anderson said. “He felt like it was his fault, and he gave her a CD.” Showing up in class is a more graceful way of getting new fans, Anderson, a UNL art major, said. He uses his edu cational opportunities to promote the Mediums’ Elvis Costello and Pixies-influenced sound. “The only reason I’m still in school is it’s great PR,” he said. We cover the spectrum from ballads to rock to punk.” Anderson said he is looking forward to playing with Happy Dog at Knickerbocker’s this weekend. “They’re a lot of fun,” Anderson said. “Stylistically, we’ll mesh with them.” Happy Dog guitarist James Valentine agrees. “They are more power-pop, and we are more jazz fusion, but we’re compatible in the sense we both play pop songs,” he said. “We both have pop melodies.” He said the Mediums’ loyal audience will contribute to the show’s atmosphere. “They’re a really fun band that everyone will enjoy. Their shows are like big parties.” Anderson says future plans for the Mediums include a limited-edition six-song EP and more regional touring. He says the band’s songwriting is progressing, and fans will hear some new songs at Saturday’s show. “If you like live music, you’re definitely going to like us," he said. “We put on a really good show.” Despite this confidence, band members feel the Lincoln music scene needs a shot in the arm. 1 .... '* ' X::V: Courtesy Photo THE MEDIUMS have been garnering better-than-average attention since the release of their self-titled album in October. The Mediums are, from left, bass player Tim Moran, drummer Mark Anderson and guitarist James Schaffner. “Three or four years ago. the scene was booming." Anderson says. “Now there’s a big void unless you play cov ers. It makes me sick to my stomach to think about playing covers.” Happy Dog's Valentine agrees. “It’s not like it was when we started to play, but there’s still great bands around. "The crowds are not as large. There’s a bit of a lull." Anderson said other problems include younger fans who can’t get into bars and the lack of a pop scene. This lack of pop bands has led the Mediums to play with some unlike ly peers, including opening for Warrant. Jackyl and L.A. Guns. “We played in C.C. Deville’s place opening for Gilby Clarke and L.A. Guns,” Anderson said. “Gilby Clarke and Tracii Guns are ripping rock guitarists." The purposely poppy Mediums, though, are sure they can please almost any ear and will take all they can get. “I want a maximum capacity there Saturday night." Anderson said. 200s For sale Computer for sale. 386; includes hard drive, monitor, modem, printer, keyboard and mouse; Windows, Word, Excel, Power Point, AOL already installed. $200 OBO 438 8489.
