Depeche Mode album has no ‘greatest hits’ DEPECHE from page 9 And the Smiths transcended a few boundaries because of it. The only things Depeche Mode ever crossed were the words “persona!” and “Jesus.” OK, there are a couple of decent moments on this 17-song release. “Just Can't Get Enough” and "People Are People” are formida ble tunes on this Depeche Mode greatest hits album. However, the rest of the album does not make this $16-pius venture worth the cash. And that’s because Depeche Mode re ally has nothing in com mon with the Clash or the Smiths. Howev er, they do share a similari ty with the Rolling Stones: They don't know when to stop putting out records. - Christopher Heine ‘In Dreams’ brings new horror to life By Danell McCoy Staff writer The storyline sounds familiar: A woman is haunted with views from the eyes of a vicious murderer and must stop his evil plans. But unlike all the others, “In Dreams” stretches the plot, twisting and turning it in such a way that view ers are left breathless on the edge of their seats. Annette Bening plays Claire i Cooper, who works as an illustrator for children's books. After the abduc I lion of a young girl, Claire s dreams begin to hold deathly premonitions | that haunt her even while she is j awake. But it is after tragedy strikes that Claire's visions become more than just deja vu. They are, instead, the invading thoughts of a serial killer | named Vivian Thompson, played by Robert Downey Jr. His obsession \v ith her begins as a i result of the dark drawings she makes for children’s fables, which he relates to his childhood. Unfortunately, the movie doesn't exactly show how or why Claire is the one chosen to be a prophet of his mur ders. Instead the viewer is tossed into a plot that makes one feel as though there is something missing. From conversational clues and the short shots of a book with Claire’s face on the back, viewers must draw conclusions as to how the obsession began. When Claire’s urgent warnings of impending tragedy are ignored by everyone, mclud ing her husband (Aidan Quinn) and her psychiatrist (Stephen Rea), she realizes that in order to stop the killer, she must become him. As Vivian slowly takes over her mind, Claire descends into his world of madness. It is after her psychiatrist literally reads the writing on the walls that he finally real izes that Ciaire is being dri ven into madness by some one else. But by then it is too late to stop the murders or her own involvement with them. Filled with action, psy chotic romance and horror. “In Dreams” has a little of something for everyone. Annette Bening’s por trayal of a woman gone mad is a tar cry trom her typical ly romantic/sexy roles. But she plays the part so well that it seems she was bom into Claire's shoes. Robert Downey Jr. is also a per fect match for his role as a psycho serial killer who seems to be suffering from a form of Freud’s Oedipus com plex and lives in an abandoned stor age building tilled with apples. His love/hate relationship with his mother fuels his compulsion to com plete, in his mind, the perfect family. But at any sign of imperfection, his temper flares and death is the out come. The chemistry between the two actors.is outstanding as they slowly weave together to form one of the most incredible tales of horror and lust ever shown on a screen. But those people hoping for the guts-and-gore footage that may be seen in most horror turns will be gravely disappointed. Instead of torn flesh and dangling extremities, the movie provokes the mind, bringing to life the story and making people question their own dreams. Footage of an underwater ghost town and short shots of death create a surreal and appropriately dreamlike seuing lor me psycno-miiiici. ahu an unpredictable ending leaves more questions rather than answers. “In Dreams” gives a new defini tion to the word horror and hopefully it will also make way for a new kind of thriller - the type that can make apples and red paint scarier than butcher knives or Elm Street. CLAIRE COOPER (Annette Bening) desperately tries to escape from a dangerous ser ial killer (Robert Downey Jr.) who knows her every move in the horror thriller “In Dreams.” _ Film Review MM The Facts Title: “In Dreams' Stars: Annette Bening, Robert Downey Jr., Aidan Quinn, Stephen Rea Director: Neil Jordan Rating: R (language, violence) Grade: A Five Words: “Dreams” gives horror new meaning 402-472-2588 > "'fc $5.00/15 words 402-472-1761 (Fa-\X; Jg ^ m m -y ■ w «■ >■ * ^ $3.50/15 words (students) dn@uni.edu M I A 1 1 t 1 I I ' I I -1 I X $0.15 each additional word 34 Nebraska Union A I / \ I I ' I I ’ I W 75 billin9 char9e P.°.
