No. 3 volleyball squad to face two ranked teams in Colorado, KSU
By Andrew Strnad
Staff writer
On paper, Nebraska’s schedule is
quite impressive.
Of the Comhuskers’ 26 wins this
season, 11 have come against ranked
opponents.
No school has beaten as many
ranked teams, and the Huskers have a
chance to add to their ledger as the reg
ular season ends this weekend with
matches against No. 15 Colorado and
No. 17 Kansas State.
On the line is not only the Big 12
Championship, but a chance for
Nebraska to play host to a regional.
At 26-1 overall and 17-1 in the con
ference, the No. 3 Huskers can clinch
their second Big 12 title in three years
with a win over either Colorado or
Kansas State this week.
NU can win the conference outright
or if Texas (22-4,16-2) loses to either
Missouri or iowa state, an unlikely pos
sibility.
“(Colorado and Kansas State) are
not easy places to
Nebraska vs. pl?y’”iuni?;o“!‘
side hitter Mandy
Colorado Monson said.
“We have to keep
our attitude that we’re the third-ranked
team in the nation.”
The Huskers will play the Buffaloes
(20-6,13-5) in Boulder, Colo. The Buffs
lost to Texas and Texas A&M last week
end.
CU was swept by Nebraska on Nov.
4 at the NU Coliseum and has been
slowed as of late because of an injury to
All-American candidate senior outside
hitter Sarah Lodge.
“Colorado has a lot of weapons, so
you can never count them out,” Monson
said
Nebraska was swept in three games
the last time it played in Boulder and
will look to exercise a little revenge as
This weekend, the NU men’s
and women's basketball
teams will play.

the Buffaloes swept the season series
last year.
A win over CU and KSU would not
only clinch the Big 12 title for the
Huskers, but probably assure them of
playing host to a regional. With its
record and ranking, NU would easily
play host to the first and second rounds.
The NCAA tournament brackets
are to be announced on Sunday with
sixteen teams hosting first-and second
round matches and four teams being
awarded a regional.
NU has played host to a regional
three of the past four seasons, with the
Huskers reaching die Final Four two of
those years.
Seniors have pride for last srame vs. CU
SENIORS from page 7
as I can,” senior kicker Kris Brown
said. “I don’t want to get caught up in
the emotion of it being the last game.
“When you put so much hard work
into something over such a long period
of time -1 can’t really say how I’m
going to feel. I’m sure I’ll feel sad, but
happy at the same time.”
Over the past four years, Nebraska
has compiled a 44-5 record and won
three national championships. Fifth
year seniors, like Heskew, also wit
nessed NU’s national title in 1994 -
and have the ring to prove it.
So even a three-loss season this
year can’t dampen his college football
experiences, Heskew said.
“You’re always going to have your
ups and downs,” Heskew said. “I’m
walking away with three national
championship rings in five years. No
other school in this country has done
that.”
The 17^-ranked Comhuskers (8-3
overall and 4-3 in the Big 12
Conference) will play host to Colorado
(7-3 and 4-3) at 1:35 p.m. Friday.
A win could possibly send
Nebraska to the Holiday Bowl in San
Diego. A loss would ensure the
Huskers their worst season finish since
1967.
“I’m going to play as hard as I can,
especially for the seniors,” junior cor
nerback Ralph Brown said. “I think it
would be gratifying if we came out on
top.
“They didn’t want to be the class
that ended the streak at home and go
out with - not a losing season, but a
season that we didn’t expect. They’re
still going to go out and play as hard as
they can.”
Despite being the fust senior class
to lose a regular-season conference
game, Kris Brown said, he’ll take the
good from his experiences in Lincoln.
“It’s just been a tremendous, over
whelming experience,” Brown said.
“To be able to come to a place like
Nebraska and only lose five games -
so far - there’s a lot of pride there.
There’s a5 lot of people that will play
their whole college career and can’t
say that”
NU women get 23rd place in NCAA meet
NCAA from page 7
Zimmer ran through the finish line
in 18 minutes, 1.18 seconds, which was
good for 70th place. Zimmer’s time
ranks as the best NU women’s finish
since 1995 and was one of the highest
finishes by aNU freshman at nationals
“I can’t remember when a freshman
has ever ran that well,” Dirksen said.
“The NCAA meet is pretty intense, and
I was impressed with how well she han
dled the pressure.”
Wiseman, who ledNUat last year’s
NCAAs in 94th place, concluded the
year with an 18:15.09 for a 98th-place
showing. Wiseman was hindered by ill
ness this year and was unable to com
pete at top racing condition.
“Amy’s effort was excellent,”
Dirksen said. “She has just been short
on competition this year.”
Juniors Jamie Pauli and Melinda
■.
Mohr were next for the Huskers in
135th and 186th with Amie Finkner
trailing just behind at 187th with a time
of 19:03.96. Michigan’s Kate
McGregor finished as the 1998 NCAA
Women’s Cross Country Champion
with a time of 16:47.21.
The Huskers, who earned an at
large berth that made them the 29th
team invited to the meet, were unable to
connect dining most of the regular sea
son because of illnesses and injuries.
“I’m real pleased and happy for the
girls,” Diiksen said. “This is a good way
to end the year.”
