Nebraska defensive players
praised KSU's Michael Bishop
after the game. The senior quarter
back accounted for 446 yards of
total offense. Bishop hit 19 of 33
passes for 306 yards and two
touchdowns and rushed for 140
yards and two more scores. He
became the first Kansas State
player to run for more than 100
yards against Nebraska since J.J.
Stokes in 1993.
"1 think we frustrated (Bishop)
in the first half, but he bounced
back, and that’s part of the reason
they're such a good team." NU
cornerback Ralph Brown said.
"Bishop assured us that he is
one of the best quarterbacks in the
country."
■
Officials from the Rose, Sugar,
Orange, Cotton, Holiday and
Fiesta bow ls had seats in the press
box Saturday. Fiesta Bowd officials
appear most interested in Kansas
State, which has a good shot to go
to Tempe, Ariz. if it w ins out.
While the Wildcats may be
traveling to Tempe. the Huskers
are looking toward San Dtego.
Holiday Bowl officials walked
Nebraska's side of the field and
talked with NU Coach Frank
Solich after the game. Holiday
Bowl’officials have indicated they
want Nebraska if the Huskers
defeat Colorado on Nov. 27 in
Lincoln. s
Kansas State set a home atten
dance record Saturday with 44,298
fans on hand. The crow d made its
presence known, cheering wildly
through most of the game. Crouch
said the noise did not affect NU's
offense.
■
Split end Kenny Cheatham and
tight end Sheldon Jackson led an
effective performance by
Nebraska's receiving corps
Saturday. Cheatham caught a
career-long reception and a career
long touchdown reception wdien
he grabbed a 45-vard Crouch pass
with one hand. The score gave NU
a 14-7 advantage w'ith 11 minutes
remaining in the fourth.
Jackson had a career-best two
touchdowns in the game, an 8-yard
pass from Crouch for NU's first
touchdown of the game and a 9
yard Crouch pass that gave the
Huskers a 30-27 lead with 8:27
remaining in the fourth. The last
time a Nebraska tight end scored
twice in the same game was
against Iow'a State in 1996.
m
NU place kicker Kris Brown
tied the NCAA record for career
points after touchdowns when he
made one in the third quarter.
However, Brown missed a chance
to break’the record when he failed
to hit a extra point on the Huskers'
next scoring drive. Brown now has
2 1 6 career extra points on 22 1
attempts.

Huskers fall to K-$tate
for first time since ’68

Mass hysteria gripped the Kansas
football team ap’d its fans
Saturday in the waning moments of the
Wildcats' 40-30 victory over Nebraska.
After the Wildcats' game-clinching
score in the fourth quarter, Michael
Bishop picked up the ball and ran down
the field in celebration. .And most of the
44.298 people who made up the largest
crowd in KSU history stormed Wagner
Field and swung from the goal post.
Problem was. three seconds still
remained on the clock.
Thirty years ofNU dominance over
Kansas State couldn't end soon enough
for the Wildcats and their fans. They
ran around hugging each other,
screaming and crying and reveling in
the sweetness of the biggest win in
Kansas State history.
The Cornhuskers, strapped with
three regular-season losses for the first
time since 1977, tasted only the bitter
ness of one that got away.
They acted disgusted when asked if
the torch has been passed from one Big
12 great to another.
“This is a one-year thing,” NU cor
nerback Ralph Brown said. “Next year,
we will not lose to Kansas State. You
can put that on me. We will not lose."
Few Huskers were more diplomat
ic than Brown. Although purple cov
ered the field and the stands, and every
where Brown’s teammates looked after
the game, most of the Huskers saw only
red.
“If you ask them off the record,
away from the TV cameras, they will
know deep down that they should not
have won this game,” Nebraska line
backer Jay Foreman said. “They did not
come out here today and kick our butts.
“I don't know what the hell the deal
was, but they did not win that game.”
Foreman disputed several calls by
the referees, including a no-call by the
officials on Nebraska's last realistic
chance to piece together a scoring
drive.
The scoreboard read 34-30 Kansas
State. With no time outs remaining, the
Huskers lined up for fourth-and-eight
from their own 32. KSU linebacker
Travis Ochs sacked Crouch for a 12
yard loss with 2:32 left in the fourth
quarter.

Husker on the field argued that Ochs
yanked Crouch’s face mask and spun it
iround his head.
"It was a face mask.” Crouch said.
‘It should have been a penalty, but they
didn't make the call.”
Said Ochs: “I'qi not sure I got him,
but they would have had to score any
wav to beat us, and that was a long wavs
off.”
The Wildcats took over on NU’s
20-yard line, rushed four times, ate up
2:17 and did not score.
Nebraska regained possession with
15 seconds left - enough time for one
play. KSU's Joe Bob Clements
Jon Frank/DN
slammed into Crouch and forced a
fumble. Kansas State’s Jeff Kelly
scooped it up and sprinted into the end
zone for the Wildcats’ final score of the
game.
“We played well, but not quite well
enough to beat what is ranked the No. 1
team in the country,” Solich said. “Yes,
I thought it was a face mask, but appar
ently no one else saw it that way.”
The disputed face mask call served
as the final oddity in a game full of
them. There were three lead changes in
the game, and KSU trailed at the half
