Disorder may be cause of students’ exhaustion By Crystee Nichols Staff writer College students often find them selves overwhelmed with exhaustion, unable to stay awake in class and tired from simply walking around campus. The symptoms may not sound unusual, but in severe cases these stu dents may be battling with a disorder known as neurasthenia, more com monly known as chronic fatigue dis order. Chronic fatigue is the seventh most common symptom in primary care practice. Fatigue results in more than 10 million patient visits each year in the United States, according to the University Health Center. “Eleven percent of all Americans have it,” said Mary Moeller, a nurse and speaker from Missouri who suf fers from chronic fatigue. “I’m sure it’s much more than that, but so many people don’t go to the doctor.” Moeller considers herself an expert on chronic fatigue after years of dealing with the disorder. She now holds seminars to show people the problem exists and to suggest changes. iamiiy practice study in Colorado indicated that people ages 15-34 are frequent sufferers, and women outnumber men 2-to-1 in fre quency. Moeller said more college stu dents are having problems with the disorder than in the past. Poor diet is the top cause;*sbe said, and eating bet ter and exercising are simple cures. “The only way I could continue going is by exercise, but it hurt so much I had to force myself,” she said. Chronic fatigue disorder causes its sufferers undue fatigue even dur ing the slightest physical or mental tasks. “It even hurt to lift my"eyelids,” Moeller said. “Every movement hurts. You’re so tired and so exhaust ed, it is hard to express it in words.” Some symptoms include: mild fever or chills, sore throat, overall muscle weakness, headaches and sleep disturbances. “It shows up in a variety of differ ent ways,” said Carol Asb, a University Health Center promotions specialist. Moeller will be holding a seminar on chronic fatigue disorder in Lincoln on Saturday at the Ramada Limited South Hotel, formerly known as the Harvester, 1511 Centerpark Road.
