On eve of election,
Hoppner predicts win

Standing in the Capitol Rotunda
on Monday afternoon. Republican
Mike Johanns made a last-minute
pitch for voters to place him in the
office just down the corridor.
Flanked by U.S. Sen. Chuck
Hagel and the entire statewide
Republican ticket, the GOP nominee
for governor called on his supporters
to make one final push in the hours
leading up to today s election.
“We knew at some point we
would turn our fate over to the won
derful citizens of Nebraska," Johanns
said. “It's up to you to take the cam
paign now and through the next 3C
hours to victory tomorrow night.”
Although Johanns has held dou
ble-digit leads in recent polls, he said
he has not taken victory for granted.
He said he told supporters to contin
ue “to run like there are 30 hours left
and we’re 15 points behind.”
After three years of campaigning
and more than 140,000 miles on the
road through all 93 Nebraska coun
ties, Johanns said he has presented a
clear message to Nebraska voters.
“We knew that if we talked
straight to Nebraskans, worked hard
and stayed on the high road, we could
offer a new vision to the state of
Nebraska,” he said, “a conservative
vision”

During a final press conference

ters Monday, Democratic gubernato
rial candidate Bill Hoppner predict
ed victory against his Republican
opponent, Lincoln Mayor Mike
Johanns.
Hoppner ended a daylong sprint
through eastern Nebraska in Lincoln
by joining his running mate.
Democratic candidate for lieutenant
governor, Pam Bataillon.
Former Sen. Jim Exon, former
Gov. Frank Morrison and former
Omaha Mayor Mike Boyle threw m
their support for the underdog candi
dates, saying they were the best team
for Nebraska.
Exon said the race between
Hoppner and Johanns was a close
one.
But in the end he said Hoppner
will attract a majority of voters in
Lincoln and in Lancaster County.
“The momentum in this race is
all Hoppner,” Exon said.
Exon also predicted the defeat of
Initiative 413, a proposed constitu
tional amendment that would limit
state revenue and spending, which
Hoppner and the Democratic Party
oppose.
He said Johanns has been
“wishy-washy and mamsy-pamsy”
in his opposition to the proposed
amendment.
