Gameday: Nebra Nebraska I-back DeAngelo Evans continues to be sidelined by a bruised tailbone, as he was kept out for the second week in a row. His replacement, Correll Buckhalter, performed admirably, gaining 125 yards on 25 carries. It was the second straight game in which Buckhalter has gained more than 100 yards. ■ For the second time this sea son, an opposing team recov ered an NU fumble and returned it for a touchdown. Missouri's Steve Erickson recovered Buckhalter’s fumble and returned it 41 yards for a touch down Saturday. Earlier in the season, Texas A&M linebacker Warrick Holdman recovered a Bobby Newcombe fumble for a touch down in the Aggies' 28-21 win in College Station. Texas. m Monte Christo was named the Fox Sports Net Player of the Game after NU's 20-13 victory Saturday. Christo rushed for 79 yards and completed one pass for 8 yards in backing up Newcombe. ■ Nebraska stayed No. 7 in both The Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches polls Sunday. The Huskers hold a slim lead over Texas A&M in the AP polk with 1,250 points to the Aggies' 1,240. In the coach es poll, NU leads Wisconsin by only four points, 1,134 to 1,130. Ohio State stayed No. 1 in both polls, continuing its trend since the beginning of the sea son. In the AP poll UCLA is No. 2 followed by Tennessee, while Kansas State is third in the coaches polk No team has ever been No. 1 from the first poll to the last. The closest any team ever came was Nebraska in 1983. The Huskers lost to Miami 31-30 in the final game of the season. * ■ Former Nebraska opponents had a mixed bag this weekend. Louisiana Tech lost 32-17 to an Auburn team that just had its head coach resign. Washington escaped with a 35-34 victory over Oregon State. Oklahoma State rolled over Oklahoma 41 26. Kansas upset No. 24 Colorado 33-17 at home under a backup quarterback. Texas A&M had possibly the most meaningful win, a 17 10 triumph over 6-2 Texas Tech. California played No. 2 UCLA close the entire game, losing 28-16. Cal had a controversial play go against it, as UCLA recov ered a fumble inside its own 5 yard line that it never actually had possession of. Cal actually recovered the fumble, but the ball was awarded to the Bruins anyway. Huskers slide by Missouri in near-replay of ’97 finish By Jay Saunders Staff writer, Nebraska and Missouri decided to make an encore performance of their 1997 thriller in a variety of ways Saturday. For the second consecutive year, the game wasn’t decided until the final play. For the second consecutive year, that final play was a sack of MU quarterback Corby Jones. ,* a_i r*___i _ __ «-—^ With four seconds left I turned to their huddle and asked them if they remembered anything like this Chad Kelsay NU rush end .rviiu AUi nit attunu lunatiu live year, No. 7 Nebraska won by seven points, this time a 20-13 test of survival in front of 76,325 at Memorial Stadium. “Both teams competed tremendously hard,” NU Coach Frank Solich said. “These games are great for the fans, but I don’t know about the coaches.” Like last season, one team had a chance to tie die game at the end of regulation. In 1997 it was Nebraska, which got a miraculous touchdown catch from Matt Davison, that had that chance and made good on it. Saturday Missouri had that chance. Jones had one last shot at the end zone, but he was sacked by Enc Johnson as time expired, thus ending MU’s upset bid. “With four seconds left I turned to their huddle and asked them if they remembered anything like this,” msh end Chad Kelsay said.
