After Harold Maurer, who will start the top post Dec. 1, mailed an Omaha World-Herald article on his appointment to his daughters in Tampa, his 8-year-old granddaughter, Diana, presented it to her class, he said. NU President Dennis Smith made the original presentation, naming Maurer, who has been the dean of the UNMC College of Medicine since 1993, the center’s new chancellor subject to approval by the NU Board of Regents at its Friday meeting. Maurer’s annual salary will be $230,000. In a statement, Smith said Maurer was an experienced academician and a highly talented physician. “He exhibits an intense interest in the research and education missions of UNMC and clearly understands how important it is to provide quality health care to the people of this state,” Smith said. Maurer worked at the Children’s Medical Center at the Medical College ofVirginia in Richmond, Va., for 13 years, and he has served as the Chief of Pediatrics for the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital in Norfolk, Va. He serves on the board of direc tors of the Nebraska Health System and is the chairman of the UNMC Faculty Council. Maurer said the school needs to “raise the bar educationally.” “I think we can do even better,” he —-... ■■ said. Also, the Nebraska Health System, a new state entity, gives the school an opportunity to expand what it’s known for, Maurer said The sys tem brings research, educational and clinical resources to the school, he said. Implementing “true diversity” within the school is another goal of Maurer’s. And, he said, addressing the needs of both rural and urban Nebraskans is key. Maurer lives in Omaha with his wife Beverly. His two daughters, Ann Rosenbach and Wendy Rausch, both live in Tampa. He has two grandchil dren, Diana and Michael Rosenbach. Maurer said he is confident the center is ready for the changes he is proposing. “It might not be overnight, but I think we need to plan and get started.” Questions? Comments? Boyd, a senior broadcasting major, is speaker of the senate in the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska. He also works as a student assistant in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications and is a routine jokester on KRNU’s (90.3) Monday night call-in show, “Lady and the Tramps,” formerly “Three Men and a German.” ,. Schkade, a senior matftenjatics major, works on the Honors Program Student Advisory Board, plays piccolo in the Comhusker marching band and is on the Neihardt Residence Center Council. In a Daily Nebraskan survey of roy alty candidates, Boyd portrayed himseli as a student full of spirit by casuall) ending every survey response with “Gt Big Red!” He also suggested changing the alma mater to “Pour Some Sugar on Me,” by Def Leppard. Schkade also took pride in her stu dent spirit in the Daily Nebraskan sur vey, saying she represents “every Husker cheerin’, band playin’, number crunchin’, residence hall livin’ student on campus.” She noted her biggest con tribution to die University ofNebraska Lincoln is “my modesty.”
