Ground game returns in win By Lisa Vonnahme Staff reporter Coke in hand. Josh Heskew had to pause for a moment to catch his breath. It was not because he was tired after Saturday’s game against Kansas, but because he was tired from walking up the stairs from the locker room to the South Stadium lounge. “Hold on,” said the 290-pound senior center. “Let me take a breather. I was told to take the stairs, so that’s where I went. “I just do what I’m told. I don't make up new things. I'm not creative.” Neither was the Nebraska offensive attack against Kansas. And that is just the way the Huskers like it. Backed by the Blackshirts’ first shutout of the season, the Comhusker offense went back to the basics, pound ing a season-high 466 yards on the ground en route to a 41 -0 victory over the Jayhawks before 76,174 at Memorial Stadium on Saturday. “We knew we were going to run it right in between the tackles.” Heskew said. “The guys stuck their noses wher ever they needed to be stuck into, and they did a great job pushing people around.” Starting for injured 1-back DeAngelo Evans, sophomore Correll Buckhalter rushed for 133 yards on 18 carries. Buckhalter also scored a career high three touchdowns, including a 32 vard run that capped NU's first drive. The Huskers (6-1 overall and 2-1 in the Big 12 Conference) kept the ball on the ground their first 12 plays from scrim mage. “We knew we were going to come out and run power football against Kansas." Buckhalter said "Running straight at people is my type of to )thal; and I was very effective” So was NU's defence Though the Blackshirt surren dered 220 y ards of total offense, tin Javhawks crossed Nl"s 4; -y ard line only once. The result was a goal-line intercep tion by rover Joe Walker - his second of the season. The sophomore's grab preserved Nebraska's shutout - a shutout that j wasn’t expected by NU Coach Frank Solich after losing to Texas A&M 28- I 21 one week earlier. “1 didn't see us coming m and shut ting them down like we did,” Solich said. “Kansas can score very quickly, and they have thrown the ball extreme ly well against everyone they've played.” Against the Huskers, however. Kansas quarterback Zac Wegner com pleted just eight of 25 passes for 121 yards. And though the Blackshirts didn't record a sack Saturday for the first time in 19 games, senior rush end Chad Kelsay was more than satisfied with the defensive performance. “To get a shutout, it makes our defense feel really good; and now we have something we can start building on,” said the 250-pound senior. “We know we've got an uphill battle to get where we want to be, but this was the first test, and we passed it.” After the loss to the Aggies, Nebraska quarterback Bobby Newcombe said the Huskers came back focused on what they wanted to accomplish this season. It showed Saturday. "1 saw during the week we had a lot more focus,” Newcombe said. “That contributed to our enthusiasm during the game "We moved the ball on that first drive for a score, and that motivated us” Leading 10-0 with less than a minute left in the half, the Huskers put together another scoring driv e, which was completed when Newcombe took the hall over the top with 13 seconds remaining. But it took two me . In his Mrs’ fourth-down attempt from the 1-yard line. Newcombe fumbled and Kansas id-:' and 0-41 recovered An off-side' call against the Jayhawk defense, how - ever. allowed NU to maintain posses sion at the 1 and ev entually score. “If we would've kept them out of the end zone, it would have been real interesting." Kansas Coach Terry Allen said "We would've gotten some momentum and had things going for us. "Football is a game of momentum and emotion. We needed some emotion to overcome some physical deficits that we faced" Middle linebacker Ja\ Foreman agreed emotion played a big part in Saturday's game, especially after last week's loss to A&M. “We came out on fire." Foreman said. "We were glad to see the vounger guys bounce back The seniors ha\e been through a loss, and we came out and played well ” Football game review sr*a i1 Rushing Name Car Yds Avg TD Name Car Yds Avg TD Correll Buckhalter 18 136 7.4 3 David Winbush 14 51 2.8 0 Dan Alexander 15 91 6.0 0 flitch Bowles 3 21 7.0 0 Monte Christo 7 63 8.9 0 Receiving Receiving Name Rec Yds Long TD Name Rec Yds Long TD Matt Davison 2 30 21 0 Michael Chandler 3 52 29 0 Joel Makovicka 1 25 25 0 Mitch Bowles 1 26 26 0 Passing Passing Name Comp Att Yds TD Name Comp Att Yds TD Bobby Newcombe 5 8 79 0 Zac Wegner 8 25 121 0 Game Stets Nebraska Kansas Nebraska Kansas First downs 28 11 Fumbles lost 2 2 Rushing attempts 79 31 Interceptions 1 0 Rushing yards 475 116 Penalties / yards 9/69 3/ 15 Passing completions 5 8 Punt returns / yards 5/43 1/4 Passing attempts 9 25 Kickoff returns / yards 0/0 3/48 Passing yards 79 121 Time of possession 39:47 20:13 Total yards 545 220 Sacks / yards 0/0 0/0 Scoring Summary Nebraska 10 7 14 10 41 Kansas 0000 0 Team Qtr Scoring play Plays - yards Score Nebraska Kansas NU 1 C.
