Though Saturday marked the
second visit to Memorial Stadium
for most Jayhawk juniors and
seniors, junior college transfer Dion
Rayford was experiencing
Cornhusker football for the first
time.
The 6-foot-3. 250-pounder
admitted he was a little intimidated
by the sea of red in the stands.
"It's a lot different." Rayford
said. "I've never seen that man\
people wear red in my life You feel
like you're in a pro stadium
"You can't sa\ we weren't j

Nebraska moved to No. - in
both The Associated Press and USA
Today Coaches Poll w ith its win.
The Huskers moved up by \ irtue of
Virginia's 41-38 loss to Georgia
Tech on Saturday.
Ohio State remains No. 1 in
both polls, while UCLA is No. 2
with a 41-38 overtime win over
Oregon.
With the game under control, a
handful of Nebraska third- and
fourth-stnngers were able to put up
career-high numbers against the
Javhawks.
Fullback Billy Legate scored
his first career touchdown on a 6
yard scamper with six minutes. 53
seconds remaining in the game.
Walk-on quarterback Jay Runty
also recorded a career-long 26-vard
run in the final period, i-back Dan
White took five carries for 23
cards, including a career-long 7
yarder.
Quarterback Monte Christo
also recorded a career high 62 yards
on the ground scoring NU's final
touchdown on a 42-yard run.

Nebraska kicker Kris Brown
extended his school record of con
secutive extra points to 116
Saturday with five PATs.
With two field goals, Brown
also boosted his NU career-record
point total to 348. The senior booted
a 27- and a 28-yarder.

Injury update: Junior wing
back Frankie London fractured his
left tibia on a punt return in the third
quarter. He had surgery Sunday and
w'ill be out the rest of the season.
DeAngelo Evans is listed as
questionable for the Missouri game
w ith a bruised tailbone. Buckhalter
would start again if Evans can not
go.
Solicit said it was likely two
quarterbacks w'ould play Saturday,
as Bobby Newcontbe did not prac
tice Monday and will see limited
snaos this week with the No. 1
offense. Freshmen Eric Crouch will
return to practice this week

Allen says turnovers doomed KU in first half

If anyone thinks the Nebraska foot
ball program is hav ing an off year, don't
tell Kansas Coach Terry Allen.
He won't buy it.
Though he's only been with the
Jayhawks for two seasons. Allen's teams
have been outscored bv Nebraska 76-0.
The Cornhuskers. who pounded Kl
41-0 Saturday, have now won the last 30
meetings between the two teams.
Three turnovers. Allen said, were
what killed the Jayhawks in their most
recent visit to Memorial Stadium
"‘You can't shoot yourself in the foot.”
Allen said "1 don't know when the last
time somebodv won here, but _von have to
come in. and you have to play flawlesslv
and you can't turn the ball over.
Consequently, we got what we probably
deserved.”
Kansas, which fell to 2-5 and 0-5 in
the Big 12 Conference, put up 220 yards
of total offense but gave the ball away two
of the four times it was in Nebraska terri
tory.
The Jayhawks came as close as the
Nl 17-yard line, when Kansas quarter
back Zac Wegner tossed up a pass that was
snagged at the goal line b\ leaping Husker

After that. KL never crossed mid
field by more than 5 yards.
But it wasn't necessunh the shutout
that hurt the most, receiver Michael
Chandler said
"It's frustrating to piav ancnodv and
not score.” Chandler said, "i guess we
kind of take it a little harder since it's been
two years since we have scored on then,.
But thev re a great team.
"We thought we could come in here
and at least make it a game. 1 think that's
the most frustrating - it was such a
blowout"
With the exception of Wegner,
Chandler put up more yardage than any
Jayhawk with 52 yards on three recep
tions.
Wegner completed just eight of 25
passes for 121 yards and. though he was
not sacked, did not attempt to run the ball.
”1 just didn't think we had things
clicking," Wegner said. "Granted, they're
one of the best defenses in the nation, but
we've played against just as good of ath
letes in the past"
W egner, a junior, will have another
siiot at Nebraska next season in
Lawrence. Kan. Senior left tackle Dan
Dercher isn't that lucks
"1 just feel sorry for our team and our
coaches." Dercher said "We re a good

Nebraska is coming off'a big game the\

"It's tough. It's one of those games
you just want to forget. There's nothing
that really came good out of tins game."
Kansas will return home to play host
to Colorado this Saturday at e> p.m.
"\ think we have a good chance to be
competitive with them, but we have to get
ready to go and get our heads back in it.”
Dercher said.
With four games left this season, giv -
ing up on the season is not an option, half
back Mitch Bow les said.
"There better not be anv quitters on
this team." Bowles said. "We don't work
all year round just to get to the season and
quit”
