I^^ART (tAI.I.ERY SCULP TURAL BOOKS” consists of more than 30 sculptures exploring the medium of the book in both form and substance. Curator of the exhibit Carla Hanzal visits the Sheldon tonight. BOOKS main uiuuuio iui ouautuic c it By Bret Schulte Senior editor Rarely are words ever cast in stone. But Carla Hanzal, previously the deputy director of Chicago’s International Sculpture Center, has assembled an exhibition of bools that aren’t likely to be lost in a library’s archives. “Legible Forms: Contemporary Sculptural Books” is a collection of sculptures based on an accessible medium: the book. Hanzal assembled the exhibition throughout the early ’90s while working at the International Sculpture Center. Tonight, she speaks at the Sheldon Auditorium about the exhibit, which has been on display since the beginning of September. Consisting of more than 30 pieces, “Legible Forms” features a book carved from solid granite, a lectern cast in yellow soap, and ordinary hard covers with nails driven through both sides. The exhibit is intended as an analysis of medi ums, both in form and content. “The artists in this exhibition are doing one of two things,” said Dan Seidell, curator of the Sheldon. “One, they are look ing at a book as an object that they can manipulate. They can do something to it visually. Others are using the physical properties of the book to say something more conceptual. It is implied that some of these artists are wanting to be as relevant as the authors of the books. That (their sculptures) can be just as authoritative as the knowledge that is communicated through die written word.” Hanzal, who graduated from Hastings college in 1987 and served as an intern for the Sheldon, currently acts as curator for the Virginia Center for Contemporary Art at Virginia Beach, Va. Touring nationally for the past few years, “Legible Forms” celebrates modem artists such as Alison Knowles, Donald Lipski and Buzz 66 Books are becoming increasingly usurped by the dematerialized world...” Carla Hanzal curator of “Legible Forms” Spec tor, among others. Hanzal believes her exhibition serves as a forum for modem artists to analyze the hyper evolution of the media. Her statement on the exhi bition reflects her concern about the de-legit imization of traditional media. “Books are becoming increasingly usurped by the dematerialized world of electronic data, which threatens to replace books as conveyors of information. It is precisely the materiality of books that defenders point to when arguing for their importance in our lives. Her lecture begins at 5:30 p.m. in the auditori um of Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, 12th and R Streets. A reception will follow in the Great Hall. ■ _r 402-472-2588 402-472-1761 (FAX) dn@unl.edu 34 Nebraska Union P.O.Box 880448 Lincoln, NE 68588-0448 $5.00/15 words $3.50/15 words (students) $0.15 each additional word $0.75 billing charge $0.75/line headline Deadline: 3 p.m. weekday prior 200s Ftrsate '. ’ ’ -- i_1_____1__ The Jean Outlet, 3241 South 13th, 420-5151.
