MxPx brings atypical punk act to Ranch Bowl By Jason Hardy Senior staff writer For years the term “punk rock” has been accompanied by a number of stereotypes. “Loud and snotty” and “fast and vulgar” are often the notions precon ceived by die general public. Whereas words such as “Christianity” and “major label” are rarely uttered in the same breath as the phrase “punk rock.” Flying in the face of those stereo types is MxPx, a poppy punk trio out of Washington. The band, which often incorporates Christian-based lyrics with clean guitar riffs and quick tempo changes, currently is touring in support of its already successful major-label debut, “Slowly Going the Way of the Buffalo” on A&M Records. MxPx, formerly known as Magnified Plaid (the x’s were originally meant as dots separating the group’s ini tials), employs a range of musical styles, from high-speed heavy rockers to up tempo melodies with complex song structures. The group’s music often is mixed with morally attentive lyrics that sometimes are shunned by devout Christian listeners who claim die group isn’t Christian enough and by other lis teners who say they’re too preachy. And none of these listeners seem to like die fact that the band has signed on to a major label. Regardless of the discontent of some fans, MxPx has been selling out shows all across the country and Tuesday night die band will grace the stage of Omaha’s Ranch Bowl. The title of MxPx’s most recent album is a reference to a letter the group received from a former fan who claimed it should just quit playing rather than sacrifice its credibility by signing with a major label- inevitably “slowly going the way of the buffalo.” Comments like these have made it hard for the band to carve a niche into the music scene, but recent successes have made the issue less important Mike Herrera, the group’s singer and bass player, said he and the rest of MxPx put their time into making music rather than listening to the snide remarks of overly judgmental fans. “It’s just not in the forefront of our lives,” Herrera said in a phone interview. “We’re more concerned about doing what we think is right We want to make a difference with our music. We’re not here to please everyone.” Herrera said the recent signing to A&M records has enabled the band to tour more extensively and market its release to a wider audience, all the while allowing the band’s members more input than they had on their previous indie label, Tooth and Nail Records. “There’s definitely a lot of extra stuff we can do with (A&M),” Herrera said “It’s all a little more organized and planned We take part in everything, and they help us out a lot with our fan chib.” He said the reluctance of fans to accept a punk band’s switch to a major label probably can be attributed to a general lack of knowledge about the music industry. “I think they just have a hasty gener alization of what selling out is,” Herrera said “I probably would have thought the same thing a few years ago, but that’s just how the media kind of twists things. You never hear about the good things major labels can do.” As far as the band’s Christian nature, the lyrics in “Slowly Going the Way of the Buffalo” are no more optimistic and preachy than punk bands like Face to Face or Unwritten Law, both of whom are on major labels and share a similar sound to that ofMxPx. “I think the key to being successful and being happy as a person is being able to sit back and say ‘We have all we need for right now,’” Herrera said. “For us, it’s a dream come true.” And despite any hassles, Herrera still maintains that playing in MxPx is a reward in and of itself. “We’re a touring band,” he said, “and itfs really encouraging when peo ple come to shows and sing along. It’s the greatest feeling in the world to see people singing songs that you put your heart into.” Herrera thanked those fans who found inspiration in MxPx’s Christian nature and who were understanding of the group’s major label connections. “It would be really hard if nobody cared. I’m sure someday nobody will care, but whenever that happens I’ll just have to find something different” Tuesday’s show at Omaha’s Ranch Bowl, 1600 S. 72nd St, costs $10.
