    Sheldon proves reputation through grant
By Sarah Baker
Senior staff writer
If the Sheldon Memorial Art
Gallery hasn’t proven its reputa
tion with the exhibits, films and
sculpture it draws from around
the country, it has certainly
proven it now.
On Thursday, the Sheldon
received a $100,222 grant from
the Institute of Museum and
Library Services.
The Sheldon, located at 12th
and R streets on the University of
Nebraska-Lincoln campus, is
among fewer than 200 museums
to receive this grant, which had
more than 900 applicants nation
wide.
The money, which will be
awarded in five payments over
two fiscal years, is going to be
used in support of existing pro
grams at the Sheldon, according
to Director George Neubert
“This kind of direct support to
the operating program of the
gallery is a real shot in the arm,
because we do not get the pro
gram support from the universi
ty,” Neubert said.
“Equally important, it is a
recognition of the quality in the
service the Sheldon provides to
the university and the communi
ty”
The money is going to be
used to supplement exhibitions,
publications, research and, most
importantly, a new handbook
describing the university’s sculp
ture collection on campus.
The new booklet will give
people a chance to learn about the
history of the sculptures, as well
as information about the artists
and time periods in which they
were crafted.
Neubert said the handbook
most likely will be printed by the
University Press and will be sold
in the campus bookstores as well
as appearing in all the state
libraries.
“About 90 percent of the cam
pus sculptures are officially a part
of the Sheldon’s permanent col
lection,” he said.
The money also will be used
to enhance the museum’s Web site
by making it more interactive.
The grant also is going to be
directed toward marketing the
gallery to students.
Appropriately enough, the
grant coincides with National
Arts and Humanities Month.
The Sheldon has numer
ous events planned throughout
the month, including
speakers coordinating
with planned exhibits
and several commu
nity outreach activi
ties.
“We are going
to celebrate,”
Neubert said about
the employees of the
Sheldon. “This is
really is a cream-of
the-crop recogni
tion.”
Neubert said
they wouldn’t be
spending any of the
federal dough on a
big party, though.
That money is
for everyone to
enjoy.
