HOLE from page 9_ ' *V. - weak. Background noises and beats seem to clutter, not enhance, many of the songs. “ ~ * , . Track five, “Reasons to be Beautiful/* tries to use deep industri al drum lines to give it an ominous and rocking quality. Though the riffs are low, heavy and repetitive, they still don’t pull off the gritty debauch ery needed to make this song work. It sounds as though die soul is miss ing from the music, and the song comes off as being messed with and too clean. Ironically, the song’s lyrics sadly mirror the song itself. “And they steal your heart away - when the fire goes out you better learn how to lake.” . The album makes a comeback towards the end with “Boys on the Radio” and “Heaven Tonight”- two songs ripe with lovey-dovey sing alopg lyrics and an overall “every thing will be all right” feel. Zits and braces aren't the end of the world, girls; stick in there, and Johnny will come around. If he doesn’t, you did n't need him anyway. Overall it’s a pretty good pop album despite three or four weak links in the happy chain. Love’s vocal style is, for the most part* the same as it always has been. The dif ference is that now her voice is more heavily relied upon mid her inability to hold notes is apparent on some of Ihe band's slower ballads. If you're looking for “Live Through This, Part II,” you won’t find it in “Celebrity Skin.”The scabs have been scraped off, and her new make-up looks quite pretty. However, if you’re hungry for some polished pop, by all means, dig in with your sweet tooth. -Jason Hardy Producer Shapiro to hold lectures PLAYER from page 9 talent that they should make movies for you as opposed to the guy down the street,” Shapiro said. Shapiro said he learned how to develop material into a coherent idea and how to put the right people together. He said he also learned about die large collaborative effort needed to get a movie to the public. /When youseeamovie, you only see a few credits,” Shapiro said. “But (the credit) trickles down to a hun dred people.” Before his job at Warner Bros., Shapiro'S involvement had been con fined to the process leading up to. the filming of die movie. With Warner Bros., Shapiro learned about every thing after filming - from the physi cal production of die film to the mar keting and distributing. Shapiro worked for Warner Bros. for more than six years before eventu ally committing himself to his own Robert Shapiro Productions. Movies Shapiro has produced include “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure,” “Arthur 2: On the Rocks,” “Black Beauty” and “Dr. Jekyll & Ms. Hyde.” He has been nominated for a Golden Globe Award and received the Christopher Award and the Genesis Award for Best Picture for “Black Beauty.” * Shapiro currently is producing “My Favorite Martian” for Walt Disney Pictures. Shapiro has lectured at New York University and Harvard, in Cambridge, Mass. He saidhe hopes his discussion provides students with the realities of the movie business. “You can learn a lot of theory in school, but you need to know what it’s like in die trenches. What does it real ly mean when you throw your hat in the air at graduation and you actually have to sit down and get a job?” Shapiro said. Sandy Veneziano, who worked with Shapiro as a production design er on the movie “My Favorite Martian,” agreed that Shapiro’s lec ture will provide students with an inside viewof Hollywood “It will tell them the realistic point of view of working in Los Angeles and what every aspect of the industry is,” Veneziano said. Veneziano is a visiting instructor for the College of Fine and Performing Arts at die University of Nebraska Lincoln who travels extensively among design and production circles. Shapiro will lecture at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Friday. The UNL College of Fine and Performing Arts, the Nebraska Film Office and the Nebraska Diplomats are sponsoring Shapiro’s stay in Lincoln. • 4 2 ■; * ' v>i ■ Folk singer Alix Dobkin uses songs to illustrate her experiences in the lesbian feminist movement. By Km Sweet Staff writer Students will have the opportu nity to hear from a historian, a civil and women’s rights activist and a famed folk singer, all in one night. Alix Dobkin, a folk musician whose songs have traced the path of the feminist movement, will per form tonight at 7 in the Culture Center. Dobkin’s life has been laced with experiences that contribute to the many hats she wears as a historian and a radical activist. They range from being raised by communist parents in the 1950s to taking an active part in the civil rights move ment in die 1960s and die women’s movement in the 1970s. But tonight Dobkin hopes to focus on the experience that has per vaded her life the most: herexperi ence as a lesbian. Dobkin’s lecture, entitled “Before Lilith Fair - die evolution of women’s music,” will be illustrated by song. It will focus on the evolu tion of feminist and lesbian feminist culture and its roots in other tradi tions, she said. Though the folk singer’s songs trace her process of discovering feminism as well as her own sexual ity, Dobkin said her other experi ences often lead her to talk about a number of issues that have shaped her., . “I’m all over the map, because feminism is all over the map,” die said. Raised in a musical family, Dobkin said she understood at an early age the potential music had as a vehicle for expressing ha views. A combination of her musical knowledge and her knack for being in the right place at the right time encouraged Dobkin’s activism. During the 1950s at the age of 16, Dobkin joined the Communist Party amid the red scare. In the 1960s, the folk singer hap pened to be in Mississippi dining the height of the civil rights movement and sang her songs during the 1963 march on Washington, D.C. In the 1970s, Dobkin said she became a feminist and came out as a lesbian. “Again, I was in the right place at the right time,” Dobkin said. Tolandra Coleman, project coor dinator for the Women’s Center, agrees with Dobkin. “She was fighting for women’s and human rights long before the movement began,” Coleman said. Dobkin said she is in the right place at the right time again, as she continues to spread her message. “My purpose is to speak to women,” Dobkin said. “That is my mission.” Coleman believes Dobkin will accomplish part of her mission. “She will hopefully empower people to be a part of the women’s movement and the lesbian women’s movement,” Coleman said.
