Dada on road to a comeback REVIEW from page 9 sounds more detailed than either of die past two albums have. Litde samples, like the one in the back drop of “California Gold,” add layers to the songs that hit die ear from the minute the album starts to play. Dada really comes of age on “Dada,” as the lyric writing gets a little more thought-provoking, and the songs address topics such as the information age (“Information Undertow”), the personalities of teas (“The Ballad of Earl Grey and Chamomile”), collapsing relationships (“Agent’s Got No Secret”), regrets (“Beautiful Turnback Time Machine”) and the West Coast lifestyle (“California Gold”), which is darker than it seems. “Dada” is a triumphant return for a band that looked like it was starting to slip. It’s good to be wrong every so often. * " -CliffHicks -,,-«£—-i-si—; :» . —>•&—**■*-£. — ;— Dada on rc in Lincoln Group plans Royal Grove stop on tour to promote fourth album PAPA from page 9 That’s where I came in.” The debut album, “Puzzle,” sold 300,000 copies and the two singles, “Dizz-Knee Land” and “Here Today, Gone Tomorrow” gar nered the group significant air play. “American Highway Flower” appeared shortly after and was fol lowed by more marathon touring. Shortly after the release of the band’s third album, “El Subliminoso,” I.R.S. Records closed up shop, and the band, which was touring at the time, was left adrift. Leavitt admits that the sudden loss of its label shook the band up a bit. “When we were signed to MCA, they hadn’t heard any music from us, so we felt it was important to give them a good group of songSj” Leavitt said. “We wrote over 40 songs and demo-ed most of them. We were in a rehearsal studio for several months. “Usually we’ve gone in with very little material and just came up with it in the studio, but this time, we really worked outside.” Dada brought in producer Danny Kortchmar, who has crafted the songs of popular rockers James Taylor and Don Henley, to help cre ate an album on par with MCA expectations. “Danny plays it very close to the vest,” Leavitt said. “He con nected with the music and wanted to expand the sound a bit. He was very hip on sampling and loop tech nology, and wanted to help us inte grate it. “He was all over it.” Although the band composed some of the loops on its own, Leavitt confessed that many were sprung from “Danny’s boxes.” One sample in particular led to a strange footnote in the back of the album insert - ‘“California Gold’ interpo lates ‘Low Rider.’” “I’ve never heard that wordv before,” Leavitt said: “It came from MCA. There’s a sample in there, that’s what I take it to mean. The track opens with a loop and that’s part of ‘Low Rider’ too, but it’s slowed way down.” On tour, dada is playing tracks from all four of its albums, Leavitt said. “We’re working to incorporate the new songs. It’s impossible to re it Its impossible to re-create the album, so we approach the live shows as a totally different thing ” Phil Leavitt dada’s drummer create the album, so we approach the live shows as a totally different thing. Usually that causes us to take another look at the arrangements.” While Leavitt didn’t think dada had ever played in Lincoln before, he confessed, “My first gig was in Bellevue. I actually did play Lincoln, it was a while ago. It was a show band, a musical revue kind of thing ... I don’t know if I’ve been back since then.” - The show at the Royal Grove tonight starts at 9, doors open at 8. Tickets are $6 at the door. Daub OKs Rick James’ Orpheum act OMAHA (AP) - Rick James now has Mayor Hal Daub’s permission to get down in this town. Daub welcomed the funk star to perform at the Orpheum Theatre next month after he was initially rebuffed. James’ agent was told by a city offi cial that two other black groups were already booked for surrounding dates,” according to a news release from Daub’s office. Managers at the city’s Civic Auditorium thought James was too similar in demographic appeal to other acts booked around the same time. Daub said that the practice, while not intentionally malicious, was intolerable. The city has offered to rebook James for the date he originally requested, said Jim Cleary, the city’s park and recreation director. “The city apologizes to James for this incident,” Cleary said. Known for his 1981 hit “Super Freak,” James is planning a come back tour after serving two years in prison for furnishing drugs to a woman at his home in 1991 and for assaulting and imprisoning another woman at a hotel in 1992.
