NU shooting better going into California By Darren Ivy Staff writer When the No. 17 Nebraska women’s soccer team travels to California to take on No. 25 UCLA and Southern California tonight and Sunday, the Comhuskers are confi dent their shots will be on target, senior striker Kim Engesser said. The shooting woes that plagued NU in a 2-1 loss to Wisconsin Milwaukee in the opening game all but vanished in last week’s Fila Invitational Tournament in which NU defeated No. 8 Clemson 4-1 and No. 20 Stanford 3-0. “Things got better in the last two games,” Engesser said. “We’re going in the right direction.” Engesser, the Big 12 player of the week, credits all the work the team put in at practice for the turnaround. After seeing more than half of NU’s shots go over the net against Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Coach John Walker decided to set aside more time in practice for shooting drills. “You don’t get that many chances,” Walker said. “When you get them, you have to make sure you make the goalie stop them.” Against UWM, the Huskers had 39 shots, but only 12 of them were on goal. Against Clemson, NU had 19 shots with 12 on goal, Walker said. Walker said the low percentage in the first game was a combination of a lack of concentration and nervous ness by the younger players. The return of forward Lindsey Eddleman from a foot injury, as well as juniors Amy Walsh and Isabelle Momeau from the Canadian national team, gave the offense a big boost, Walker said. He added that they bring more experience and leadership onto the field. Anytime you can nave them in the lineup, it helps tremendously,” Walker said. “Not only do they do good jobs, but they help out others.” The Huskers are going to need everyone to help each other out against the Bruins and Women of Troy. UCLA is 4-1 after winning the San Francisco Diadora Classic Sept. 12-13. USC, meanwhile, is 2-2. “These are two quality teams who are well coached and play in a good conference,” Walker said. “It’s like playing two NCAA Tournament games.” While the Bruins are ranked, Eddleman said the USC game Sunday at 3 p.m. might be the tougher match. Last year, the Huskers defeated the Women of Troy 2-1 in Lincoln. According to Eddleman, Southern Cal players weren’t too happy after that loss. “This will be one of the toughest games this season, especially on the road and after last year,” Eddleman said. “I think we can handle it as long as we play like we did last week.” Linebacker becomes NlPs ninth recruit By David Wilson Senior staff writer For the last two weeks, Shaun Coleman woke up, attended school and went to football practice before spending nearly three hours on the phone each night A SuperPrep All-American from Aurora, Colo., Coleman got call after call from coaches, newspapers, recruiting services and even an occa sional nutty college football fan. Despite pressures pulling in every direction, the 6-foot-4,210-pound line backer said he finally made the deci sion he felt was best for him. After being offered a scholarship from Nebraska Coach Frank Solich at the Comhuskers’ camp in June, Coleman called to accept earlier this week. Nine high school seniors have now given NU verbal commitments to sign letters of intent Feb. 3. “I just felt like I was completely ready,” Coleman said. “When they made the offer, I was pretty honored and pretty pumped up, but I wanted to take some time and make the best decision I could. It ended up being Nebraska. That’s pretty sweet” Coleman, who runs a 4.5-second hand-timed 40-yard-dash, also plans to play baseball at Nebraska. An outfield er who hit .440 with 11 homers in 22 games last spring, Coleman said he has spoken with NU Baseball Coach Dave Van Horn about the possibility. A quarterback for Regis Jesuit High School this fall, Coleman has helped his team to a 2-0 start by rush ing for 140 yards and passing for 120. Coleman has qualified academi cally.
