The Invitational opened early on Monday, completing one round before postponing the latter part of the second round because of dark ness. At the end of one round, Nebraska is in second place, trailing by 13 shots to No. 24 New Mexico State, which shot a team score of 284. NU is led by Australian fresh man Amanda Sutcliffe, who shot a 71, four strokes behind New Mexico State sophomore Sasha Medina. NU junior Elizabeth Bahensky tied for fifth, shooting a 73. Senior Gretchen Doerr tied for 15th with a score of 76, while freshman Sarah Sasse tied with five other women for 18th place. Kansas State and Kansas finished sixth and 13*. NU Assistant Coach Bill Spangler commented on the team’s solid start. “With the conditions we’ve got, we think second place is pretty good,” he said. Spangler said die Aggies will be difficult to catch today when the tournament concludes. “We’re looking to sneak up on them,” Spangler said. “We’ve got a good second round going so far. But New Mexico State is a great team and we’re glad to be duking it out with them.” ' Nebraska’s lead over its Big 12 opponents isaa accomplishment to be proud of, according to Spangler, as Missouri returns to the invitation al seeking to successfully defend last year’s title. Missouri, which trails NU by six strokes at the end of the first round, comes off a tourna ment victory in the 1998 fall season. The Invitational will continue today at Firethom Country Club. The reception sealed a vic tory for the Comhuskers, who led 14 3 much of the second half. The Huskers mobbed Wiggins in the end zone as he jumped up and down, and he probably felt excited about tiie score. But you wouldn’t have know it after the game. “It felt kind of nice,” Wiggins said without cracking a smile. “It was pretty exciting. I just wanted to make sure I was in the end zone.” Wiggins’ humbleness couldn’t overshadow his play against the Bears. The 5-foot-11 wingback grabbed a career-high seven receptions for 97 yards and a touchdown, both career bests. His previous career mark was three receptions against Virginia Tech in tiie 1996 Orange Bowl. Wiggins also led Nebraska with one kickoff return for 32 yards. And still he wasn’t satisfied with his play. “I know I missed a couple blocks,” Wiggins said. “There was a _;__ Brand New 3 bedroom, 3 Bath, in each unit $760 per month, available now. No Smokers. Sophomore split end Matt Davison had five receptions for 44 yards and tight end Sheldon Jackson grabbed one pass for 31 yards. “Shevin made the big plays when they counted,” Solich said. “We really needed those type of plays from our receivers because Cal crowded the line the whole game.” Wiggins and the NU receivers have enjoyed Solich^ play calling so far this year. Nebraska threw 28 times Saturday and gained more than 150 yards through the air for the third consecutive week. “It’s fun,” Wiggins said. “We’re just trying to balance out the offense a little more. “I’m always confident when I step on the field.
