A few inconsistencies leaves TVCD sounding like a work in progress rather than a solid step for ward from the brave pioneering of “Major Label Debut” TVCD starts out strong with “Count to Three,” a high speed rocker full of gritty riffs and fast and solid drum rolls. The song even begins with the sound of breaking glass - pretty “punk,” huh? The escalation continues with “Speed of Mutation,” easily one of the album’s most catchy tunes. Using melodic guitar leads with a number of tempo shifts, the number changes to create a song sure to please poppy rockers and angry punkers alike. From there die album piles up qual ity trades. Each of the IS songs have something to offer, and overall there arepo reasons to jump for the skip but ton. The lineup even includes jUively Mixing large doses of driving punk tunes with poppy sing-alongs (Ml of “ooohs” and “uh-ohs”), the new lineup gives the band a fresh quality lacking on some previous works. I; 4NNP* ■ ' ' V The flan-pounding skills of SquirtgundiummerDanLumley stand out throughout the album, and former Zoinks guitarist Zac Damon also makes his presence felt by changing up lead styles from basic and melodic to fast and screaming. As you may have suspected, the album itself sounds a bit too polished for a notorious punk band and in some places the guitarscould be more gritty and fun. TVCD ends with ‘‘Bum it Down,” a song about the naivete of society’s television-watching public. Probably the alburn^ coup de Gras, Lumley’s drumming makes the song a veritable grand finale of bursting dram and skin work. Drum roils and cymbals crash intricately into Jughead’s rhythm guitar and keep die song driving from start to finish. Shifting gears a bit from the pure punk of Screeching Weasel is the first release from The Mopes, a band of song trip to the beach in the traditionof The Beach Boys. The group features former Screeching Weasel bassist Dan Vapid on guitar and vocals, former Queers bassist B-Face and Screeching Weasel’s current guitarist and drum mer, Jughead. The Mopes also recruit ed Dan Lumley from Screeching Weasels to work a little overtime by appearing on this record as well. The album, “Low Down, Two-Bit Sidewinder,” is a short but Am collec tion of sand-and-sun songs dealing with childish themes like crazy birds, Hula-Hoops, girls and general kooki ness. The two instrumentals, “Loopy Cockatoo” and “Wipeout on the Dunes,” are probably the EP’s best tracks. “Do die Hairball” is another notable, and Vapid’s vocal stylings sound like he could just as easily be singing “The Bird is the Word.” The EP deserves recognition in its own right; those expecting to hear something like Screeching Weasel or the Queers will most likely be disap pointed. Also, the songwriting on most of the songs relies on simplicity, and most are litde more than standard G, C, If you’re in die market for a new album, you may want to throw some money toward the Screeching Weasels before the Mopes. It’s a more complete record and definitely more punk for the buck. -Jason Hardy I ^ 1 Spacious 3 bedroom, oak floors, freshly decorated, ^C. $47S/month, 489-1938 or 730-5050. _ Close to Campus Unfurnished three bedroom, 1 1/z baths, fireplace, kitchen with appliances.
