Man sentenced to life 1 __ By Josh Funk Senior staff writer In Sie span of a morning, first degree murder suspect Austin DeHaas pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison Ibesday. * DeHaas was convicted of tiie April murder of 62-year-old Barbara Reid in her Lincoln apartment DeHaas pleaded guilty to the charges as part of a plea agreement to ensure that the county attorney would not seek the death penally. Lancaster County Attorney Gary Lacey said his office was contacted about the matter late Monday after noon. “We got a note about the plea (instead of a call or meeting) very unexpectedly” Lacey said. After pleading guilty, DeHaas waived his right to a pre-sentence hearing before District Court Judge PaulMenittJr. He was sentenced in the same hour he pleaded, Lacey said. “This was unusual for a murder case.” DeHaas’ lawyer, Kristi Egger Brown, a public defender, is out ofher office until Sept 11 and could not be reached for comment Reidfc family found Reid lying in the bed ofher apartment with the cov ers pulled over her head, covering a stab wound in ho-chest The family members had been unable to contact Reid for several days. Police investigators found that DeHaas had been staying with Reid for a week before her death. After her death, he tried to sell several things from her apartment, including a tele vision, a videocassette recorder and clothes. Then DeHaas shaved his mus tache, cleaned up and left town. This is discrimination - period.” ASUN Speaker Matt Boyd agreed “If we do not pass this bill tonight, we are saying die university has the right to discriminate by the appearance of a person,” Boyd said. Not all senate members supported the “Union Non-Student Policy” bill. Communications Chairman Joel Wiegert abstained to vote because he did not feel informed on all the issues surrounding the proposed policy. “I’m not going to vote on this,” Wiegert said. “Russell shouldn’t even be ready for a vote. [5 Man stabbed in tent A woman sharing a tent with a man in a Lincoln alley stabbed him Wednesday morning after he allegedly tried to have sex with ho- die previous night. " The man, 36, was sharing his tent with a 39-year-old woman and her 16 year-old daughter, Lincoln Police Capt David Beggs said The tent was in an alley between 21st and 22nd streets and P and Q streets. The girl awoke in the middle of the night to see the man with his pants down getting ready to pull die woman’s pants down, Beggs said The girl told him not to bother her mom, and they went back to sleep. In the morning, the girl told her mother what she had seen, and the woman became upset and stabbed the man in the ribs, Beggs said The man rolled up his tent and walked to Day Watch where the staff noticed that he was bleeding and called police. The man was taken to BiyanLGH West Medical Center, where he was treated for his injury and released. The woman was arrested for assault Suspected robber arrested Police arrested a Lincoln man want ed by the FBI for bank robbery Wednesday morning. A federal grand jury indicted the 23-year-old Lincoln man Tuesday for the armed robbery of Saline State Bank in Hallam on Dec. 12,1997, according ^ to die U.S. Attorney's office. In the robbery, two armed men entered the bank and left with about $9,980. After the warrant was issued, Lincoln police began checking places where the suspect was known to fre quent, Lincoln Police Sgt Terry Sherrill said. Police spotted the suspect’s car parked outside a house on the 4900 block of Starr Street around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday. Officers surrounded die house and an arrest was made without a problem at 2:20 a.m., Sherrill said.
