This season he moves over to defensive tackle to replace Peter. Warren played in all 13 games last season and started in two. He had 19 tackles along with a sack. Defensive Coordinator Charlie McBride said NU will have a diffi cult time filling Peter’s shoes. “Anytime you lose a first-round ' draft pick, it’s tough,” McBride said. “But you really can’t concern your self with that, you must move on and get the other players ready to per form at that level” With tremendous shoes to fill, Warren doesn’t feel any pressure. “We’re looking to have the same success as past players have had here,” Warren said. “It’S our obliga tion to play up to their level. When you step out onto that field, you’re not playing for yourself, you’re play ing for your family.” After playing together for two years, Wiltz and Warren get along well. “We kind of clicked in that we both have similar personalities,” Wiltz said. “We’re both kind of laid back.” In their first stint as starters, both Warren and Wiltz had two tackles against Louisiana Tech. Wiltz had an interception late in the game that thwarted a Bulldog drive. McBride said Wiltz and Warren performed up to par in the first game. “They both played well against Louisiana Tech but need to work on playing together and communicating better,” McBride said. “Their quick- * ness and mobility will improve as the season progresses.” With the Huskers’ style of defense, it’s important die defensive linemen don’t get cleared out of their space, McBride said. “The defensive linemen play a major factor,” McBride said. “It starts in the middle of the defense and is critical to the overall success of the defense that they play well.” “The golden rule is to keep the linemen off of the linebackers, stop the run and get a good pass rush,” Wiltzsaid. Another major concern of the interior defensive line is the lack of depth behind the first unit. Sophomore Loren Kaiser and fresh man Jason Lohr make up the little depth the Huskers have at the posi tion. Despite the lack of depth, McBride said he’s confident in die back-ups. • “I’m very confident with Kaiser, and I’m comfortable with Lohr,” McBride said.>He’H get better as the season goes on, but you can’t substi tute experience for anything.”
