    Gameday: Nebraska 56, Loui
Tight end Sheldon Jackson
posted a career-high 94 yards
on two receptions Saturday. He
scored Nebraska’s first touch
down of the game on a 46-yard
pass from Bobby Newcombe.
Jackson fell short of another
score with a career-long 48
yard reception that ended at the
1 yard line. Many in Memorial
Stadium thought he had scored.
“My teammates said I did,
and the fans said I did, but the
men in stripes are all that mat
ters,” Jackson said. “You’d
think, being at home, that I
would get that call. But I’ll
work on it Monday. It won’t
happen again.”
The Huskers suffered few
^juries Saturday but may not
y unscathed,
sprained his
lot be able to
rday’s game
against Alabama-Birmingham.
Defensive Coordinator
Charlie McBride expressed
concern over rush end Mike
Rucker. McBride said a nag
ging groin injury may have
bothered Rucker. Other minor
injuries struck quarterback Eric
Crouch (bruised right shoul
der), linebacker Julius Jackson
(sprained left ankle) and defen
sive tackle Jason Wiltz (right
knee sprain).
a
Although McBride and
Defensive Backs Coach George
Darlington were disappointed
with the play of NU’s secondary
- which allowed 590 yards
passing - Louisiana Tech Coach
Gary Crowton said the Huskers
have nothing to worry about.
“I am very impressed with
their secondary,” Crowton said.
“Those are the best recruits in
the country out there. Ralph
Brown made play after play.”
Louisiana Tech graduate
and NFL Hall of Fame quarter
back Terry Bradshaw filled in
for NBA star Karl Malone as
Louisiana Tech’s honorary cap
tain.
Malone, a Louisiana Tech
basketball player, was sched
uled to appear, but a death in his
family forced him to miss the
game.
Bradshaw played at Tech
from 1966-69 throwing for
6,589 career yards - third best
in school history.

During a halftime ceremo
ny, former NU rush end Grant
Wistrom had his No. 98 uni
form retired.
Former offensive lineman
Aaron Taylor also was sched
uled to have his number retired,
but was not able to attend, so he
will have a different ceremony
at a later date.

Louisiana Tech quarterback Tim
Rattay and wide receiver Troy
Edwards were just that Saturday, but
their individual efforts were not
enough to help the Bulldogs upset No.
3 Nebraska.
Edwards’ 405 yards receiving
shattered the NCAA single-game
record of 363 yards set by UNLV’s
Randy Gatewood in 1994 against
Idaho State.
His 21 receptions and yardage
totals also were career highs and
Louisiana Tech single-game school
records.
i ne omer nan or me dynamic auo,
Rattay, completed 46 of 68 pass
attempts while throwing for 590 yards
- all three were career highs and
Bulldog records.
“Troy Edwards and Tim Rattay are
as good as there are out there,”
Louisiana Tech Coach Gary Crowton
said.
Before NU (1-0) and Louisiana
Tech (0-1) agreed to play in the Eddie
Robinson Classic, most Nebraska fans
had never heard of either player.
But Edwards had everyone’s atten
tion in the Comhusker state after his
pre-game remarks.
“I think (their defensive backs) are
good, but I think I’m just a better play
er than they are,” Edwards said before
the game.
Crowton said he tries to keep
Edwards from spouting off, but he
wasn’t all that unhappy with him.
