Truck hits restaurant A drunken driver missed her turn and careened into a Burger King early Wednesday morning. At 1:20 a.m. a Lincoln police officer heard rapid acceleration from the north just before a 1979 Chevrolet truck drove past where the officer was stationed on 48th Street, Sgt. Ann Heermann said. The officer began following the truck, which was being driven an estimated 80 mph, south on 48th Street toward Holdrege Street. At Holdrege the driver attempt ed to turn the truck left into the eastbound lanes of Holdrege, but failed. Instead the driver started dri ving south in the northbound lanes of 48th Street, Heermann said. Then the driver turned into the Burger King driveway, 48th and Holdrege streets, plowing through the flower garden and turning back north toward the restaurant. The truck struck the comer of the building and finally came to a stop. The driver was arrested for dri ving under the influence, driving with a suspended license, reckless driving and refusing to take a blood-alcohol measurement test. The wild ride caused $15,000 damage to the building, $50 to the garden and $3,000 to the truck. Burglar caught with Zippo A burglar was caught inside Frontier Harley-Davidson stealing a Zippo lighter early Wednesday morning. Police responded to an alarm call at the 2801 N. 27th St. busi ness just before 2 a.m., Heermann said. When the officer arrived he found the south window of the dis play area broken, and saw a man inside run toward the back of the business. Officers found the man hiding in the back with a $20 Harley Davidson commemorative Zippo lighter. Parked car set ablaze Someone set fire to the inside of a car parked on P Street Wednesday. Around 2 a.m. a witness report ed a fire burning inside of a 1992 Toyota parked on the 2900 block of P Street, Heermann said. The witness was walking back from Gas ‘N’ Shop when he saw the Are, which caused $4,000 dam age to the car. Fire inspectors said the fire was started on die passenger seat. Ben Nelson announced Wednesday morning that more than 5,000 people have toured the gover nor’s residence since it was reopened for die first time in 40 years. Every part of the mansion that has been home to 10 governors since it was dedicated in 1958, including the private quarters, has been on display <————— to the public since its rededication Friday. “This level of interest in the resi dence shows the fondness Nebraskans have in this historic land mark,” Nelson said. “I hope those touring the resi dence have die same feeling of pride that Diane and I have in this wonder ful home.” Diane Nelson and former Nebraska first man Bill Orr led a committee that raised more than $1.3 million in private funds to pay for the restoration. The governor’s home was com pletely refurbished with new furni ture and decorations for the first time since the house’s construction in 1957.
