    Huskers set same
goals for ’98 season
NU looks to replace Big 3
By Darren Ivy
Staff writer
Even though the Nebraska
women’s softball team graduated two
All-Americans and another current
professional play
er, expectations
haven’t changed,
Coach Rhonda
Revelle said.
Coming off a
fifth-place finish
at the College
World Series, the
■ Comhuskers’
goal is to make it
back this year.
“We are not settling for anything
less,” said Jessica Draemel, a sopho
more utility player. “When I talk with
the other players, it is not even a ques
tion.”
But can the Huskers replace Ali
Viola, Jennifer Smith and Christie
McCoy - the three, four and five bat
ters in die lineup?
Last season the trio helped NU
belt 62 home runs and post a school
record 48-12 mark.
The Huskers might not be able to
replace the trio’s power, but Draemel
said NU will find a way to win.
“We lost the meat of our lineup so
we will have a different style of
offense,” Draemel said. “We will have
to get the bunt down and hit in runners*
when they are in scoring position. We
can’t rely on the long ball.”
Smith’s bat wasn’t the only thing
she brought to^qJteapvShe also
formed a special bond with junior
pitcher Jenny Voss.
Smith caught all 40 of Voss’ wins
last season.
Freshman Heather Martin and
Texas Tech transfer Ellen Middleton
will battle for the starting catcher
position.
Revelle said Voss threw with both
catchers during the summer.
“The pitcher/catcher relationship
is so critical,” Revelle said.
Voss, an All-American last sea
son, will have some help on the
mound this year from freshman
LeighAnn Walker of Tucson, Ariz.,
and sophomore Lori Tschannen.
Revelle plans to use Voss less
often than last year.
“We have thrown her too much,
and she is starting to feel it,” Revelle
said.
One player the Huskers will be
without this fall is junior All
American second baseman Jennifer
Lizama. She had shoulder surgery
during the middle of the summer.
However, she should be ready by the
spring, Revelle said.
Unlike last season, when a num
ber of NU players were injured,
Lizama will be die only one sitting out
this fall.
Revelle said the season will be a
good chance for her to tiy players at
different positions and build depth.
“Your record isn’t important, it’s
what you accomplish as a team,”
Revelle said.
Practice starts Aug, 31, and the
first game is Sept. 12 at the Colorado
State Tournament
“We have so many new people at
so many key positions,” Revelle said.
“We will have to get through die fall
season to have more realistic goals.”
But Revelle said there shouldn’t
be as long a drought as there was
between the last two times NU made
the College World Series. That was a
period of 10 years from 1988 to 1997.
“Once a team achieves at a level,”
Revelle said, “it’s easier the second
time.”

ful. Frazier quarterbacked NU to
back-to-back national champi
onships in 1994 and 1995.
“I’m not surprised,” Frazier said.
“This is what normally happens
when you have this many big names
in one place at one time.”
Frazier, who resides in Lincoln,
is currently the director of public
relations and market development
for Nebraska Technologies and
Telecommunication.
■
In the last few years, Husker fans
have swarmed Frazier so much, he
said, he can’t even go to the grocery
store without signing a few auto
graphs.
“I don’t go out much,” Frazier
said. “I stay hidden.”
The idea of getting together with
former Huskers and Heisman
Trophy winners also was what
brought Rozier to Harvey’s Casino.
. “It’s good to see all the old
guys,” Rozier said. “It makes us feel
good - like we’re not so old.”
McGwire, Sosa inch
closer to Maris mark
Home run record within eight
PITTSBURGH (AP) -
Mark McGwire hit his 53rd
homer - moments after
Sammy Sosa hit No. 50 in
Chicago to become the first
National Leaguer to hit that
many in 49 years Sunday as St.
Louis lost 4-3 to the Pirates.
McGwire, who broke Babe
.Ruth’s record for homers over
three consecutive seasons with
a tape-measure homer
Saturday, hit a 2-2 pitch from
Ricardo Rincon deep into the
left-field seats with two outs
in the eighth inning.
McGwire became just the
third NL player to hit as many
as 53 homers in a season, join
ing the Pirates’ Ralph Kiner
(54 in 1949) and the Chicago
Cubs’ Hack Wilson, who hit a
league-record 56 homers in
1930.
McGwire’s sixth homer in
five days left him eight short
of tying Roger Maris’ record
of 61 in 1961 with 32 games to
play. McGwire, however, plans
to sit out Monday afternoon’s
game in Pittsburgh, the second
game he would take off in a
four-day span.
Cardinals manager Tony La
Russa said recently that
McGwire probably will take
more days off to stay fresh
down the stretch.
Sosa, chasing McGwire
and Maris, had connected on
his 50th in Chicago literally
minutes before McGwire’s
shot.
Jason Schmidt (11-9) won
his third in a row after losing
eight straight despite walking
six and yielding seven hits
over 5 2-3 innings. Jason
Christiansen got the final out
for his sixth save.
Kent Mercker (8-11) took
the loss.
Comhuskers
choose five
team captains
From staff reports
Three offensive players and two
defensive players were selected to be
captains for this season’s Nebraska
football
NU fullback Joel Makovicka, cen
ter Josh Heskew and tight end Sheldon
Jackson were selected from the offen
sive side of the ball. Linebacker Jay
Foreman and rush end Chad Kelsay
were selected from the defense. All the
players were seniors.
The captains were selected at a
team meeting Saturday morning before
Photo Day at Memorial Stadium.
Cornhusker Coach Frank Solich
said he was pleased with his team’s
selections.
“All five of the captains are excel
lent choices,” Solich said. “They are all
guys who have had a great work ethic
throughout their careers here and they
have all stepped forward as leaders in
the off-season.”
Nebraska’s Saturday morning
workout yielded no major injuries after
what was called a disappointing scrim
mage Friday. Sophomore DeAngelo
Evans underwent surgery Saturday and
is expected to be out about three weeks.
The Huskers’ first game is against
Louisiana Tech Aug. 29.
