ROBAK from page 2
Also, as vice president for external
affairs, Robak will be one of the two
closest advisers to NU President
Dennis Smith. She will work with
Smith, the chancellors of all four NU
campuses and other senior administra
tors to develop programs, policies and
procedures.
“External affairs is a very broad
arena which determines the way the
university interacts with the external
environment,” Smith said
Robak also will lead the universi
ty’s efforts to build and strengthen rela
tionships with external constituencies.
These include the Chamber of
Commerce, the Nebraska Legislature
and the governor’s office.
She will have overall responsibility
for state, federal and public relations
and communications for NU. As cor
poration secretary, Robak will be the
principal staff liaison to the regents.
“Those kind of activities are what
she has been doing on a regular basis,”
Smith said.
Robak said she had two other job
offers pending when she was asked by
Smith to take the job at the university.
But, she said, she couldn’t resist the
challenges of working in a policy-mak
ing and educational environment and
■ the opportunity to work at the universi
ty she attended
Smith cited Robak’s background as
being beneficial to her new job. She
received a bachelor’s degree from UNL
and a law degree from the NU College
ofLaw.
She taught for four years in the
Lincoln Public Schools and was a part
ner in a Lincoln law firm.
She became Gov. Nelson’s legal
counsel in 1991 and later become his
chief of staff before being elected lieu
tenant governor in 1993.
Robak will begin her university job
the first week of January, after a new
lieutenant governor is sworn into
office.
Donal Bums, associate executive
vice president for external affairs, will
be the interim corporation secretary
from July 13 until Jan. 6, 1999. Bums
will receive a monthly stipend for addi
tional responsibilities during this peri
od
Smith has said he does not plan to
appoint an interim vice president for
external affairs. Instead, Ron Withem
and Troutman will assume additional
responsibilities during the interval.
Withem has been named associate
vice president for external affairs and
will continue his work as the director of
governmental relations. Troutman was
named assistant vice president for
external affairs.
