Nelson advocates wind energy

initially, it makes economic sense in
the long run, he said.
In time, Bundy said, wind-gener
ated electricity will provide savings
because its costs are decreasing rela
tive to other energy costs.
Nelson added that the use of
renewable energy would reduce
future environmental cleanup costs.
Nelson also announced that a soy
bean-based fuel additive will be
added to the diesel fuel mixtures used
in the state’s fleet of nearly 1,600
trucks and other vehicles. The addi
tive, called SoyGold, will make up 1
percent of the mixture.
The project is a joint venture of
the Nebraska Department of Roads,
the Nebraska Soybean Board, Ag
Processing Inc., Farmland Industries
and the Western Regional Biomass
Energy Program.
“This creates a win-win result for
all the people of Nebraska,” said Paul
Cammack, a maintenance engineer
for the Nebraska Department of
Roads.

amounts to a “priming of the pump”
for expanded use of renewable energy

conference:
■ Nelson announced the forma
tion of the Human Resources
Investment Council, which met for
the first time Wednesday. The council
will study Nebraska’s labor shortage
problem and make policy recommen
dations to the governor and
Legislature for promoting workforce
attraction and retention.
Nelson, whose proposals for
encouraging more of the state’s top
students to attend college in
Nebraska and enter the state’s work
force have failed in the Legislature
each of the last two years, said the
council could aid the passage of
future proposals by sending clear sig
nals about the nature and scope of the
problem.
“It’s no secret that workforce
attraction and retention is one of the
most important things we can do to
meet the growing needs of employ
ees,” Nelson said.
■ Nelson said he would decide
next week whether to call a special
session of the Legislature in the wake
of his veto of LB 1175. He said he is
still assessing the veto’s impact on
schools as they plan their budgets for
the coming year.
Although Nelson supported the
bulk of the bill’s provisions, including
a renewal of the formula for state spe
cial education funding and relief for
very small school districts, he vetoed
the bill because of a controversial
amendment it contained.
Nelson and others believe the
amendment would have obligated the
state to provide $70 million in educa
tion funding when the next round of
property-tax levy reductions takes
effect in 2001.
