Jazz group to perform tonight JAZZ from page 11 Ellington, as well as newer composi tions by members of the orchestra. The NJO enjoys playing different styles of music, Love said, but especial ly enjoys playing the blues. “This program is mostly made up Montreaux Jazz Festival in July 1997. Many big-name jazz artists have performed with the NJO, including Clark Terry, Laurie Frink, Victor Lewis, Jay McShann, Bill Watrous, Don Menza and John LaBarbera, among others. And several NJO members have of the Big Band,” David Baker’s “Roly Poly,” Mark Benson’s “Joe’s Theme” and Sharp’s “Star City” and ‘Suspension Bridge.” Sharp’s “Suspension Bridge” is kind of a blues, Love said. “The title refers to a lot of suspend ed chords, without thirds but with of pieces based on the blues, but in a wide variety of styles,” he said. “We’re also going to play one ballad-the Woody Herman standard ‘Early Autumn’ - and Dave Sharp’s piece ‘Star City,’ which aren’t based on the blues, for contrast” The NJO was founded in 1975 to give the many out standing jazz musicians in the area a place to play. 6i I don’t think we ve ever done two concerts in a row with the same personnel Ed Love NJO music director fourths,” he said. “The style goes back and forth between samba and fast jazz-swing style. It’s a vehicle for guitar, trom bone and trumpet solos.” Sharp’s composition “Star City” is “a waltz in a real fast tempo,” Love said. “It’s one of (Sharp’s) earliest jazz compositions for jazz band, written over 12 years ago. It features But because there are so many tine musicians in the area, and they have so many other duties besides music per formance, it can be interesting to make up the personnel roster for any given concert, Love said. “We have a lot of people on our substitute list,” he said. “I don’t think we’ve ever done two concerts in a row with the same personnel.” On this concert, the NJO will have a substitute bass player and drummer, Love said. The NJO participates in both the Nebraska Arts council Touring Program and the Mid-America Arts Alliance Touring Program, and its trav els have been as nearby as the Lincoln Ramada Plaza Hotel and as far away as England and Scotland. In addition, the NJO performed at the famed “broken free” of the orchestra to make bigger names for themselves else where. These musicians include Ryan Kisor, member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra in Washington, D.C., as well as the Mingus Big Band; Matt Wallace, saxophone soloist with the Maynard Ferguson Big Band; Jeff Newell, winner in the Hennessy Best of Chicago Jazz Search Concert; and Rex Cadwallader, jazz composer and arranger. The NJO plays about five concerts a year, Love said, as well as performing a number of touring concerts and other events. Tonight’s concert will be a reprise of Tuesday night’s concert, which was held in Omaha. The program for tonight’s concert will include Dick Fenno’s “I Remember Basie,” Bob Mintzer’s “Art extended solos for guitar and saxo phone and is in an extremely unusual extended form, around 105 bars long.” This is the NJO’s final concert of the 1997-98 season, and may be its final concert at the Ramada in Lincoln, Love said. “We don’t know with the new lead ership at the Ramada whether or not our relationship will continue,” he said “We’ve heard nothing from them, and aren’t even sure if the new vice presi dents are in place yet to talk with. We haven’t tried to set up any concert dates with them, although we will once everything has settled down.” The NJO concert will be held tonight at 7:30 at the Ramada Plaza Hotel, Ninth and O streets. Admission is $5 for students, $9 for seniors and $12 for adults. Waters Edge touts Christian melodies WATERS from page 11 ented.
