Moeser suggests new pass/no pass policy
GRADES from page 1
automatically be noted on a student’s
transcript. A student’s GPA is not
affected by withdrawing from a
course.
“With these standards in mind, ask
yourself if this is where you want this
university to be,” Moeser said.
“Take these issues - all of the aca
demic control you have - and create a
more rigorous environment”
Moeser said he doesn’t have a
problem with the intent of the pass/no
pass grading policy, but only if stu
dents are taking classes outside of their
major.
“We should and need to encourage
students to venture into uncharted,
untested waters,” he said.
However, Moeser did say allowing
a student to take a course for 12 weeks
and then drop it is not only a waste of
the student’s time and money, but also
an inconvenience to faculty members.
“I believe (12 weeks) is entirely too
late for a student to free-will drop a
course,” Moeser said. “I want faculty
to take action and stop it.”
Moeser was assured by senate
members that many departments,
including chemistry, don’t allow stu
dents to take courses within their major
as a pass/no pass option. However, no
senate members commented on proce
dures and policies for withdrawing
from a course in a student’s major.
Psychology Professor Don Jensen
applauded Moeser and said he sup
ports his efforts.
Jensen said he also would like to
see a new pass/no pass and course
withdrawal policy applied to a stu
dent’s minor.

I want to challenge this university. ...
James Moeser
UNL chancellor
Moeser concurred.
Newly inaugurated Academic
Senate President Patricia Kennedy
said the Senate’s Executive Committee
will discuss the issue and decide if any
action needs to be taken by the senate.
Moeser said faculty members need
to ask themselves if the university is
truly rigorous in the academic regula
tions for students.
“You control this; this is your doc
ument - the undergraduate bulletin,”
he said. “I strongly urge you to take a
look at it”
