Recruitment day offers college experience By Lindsay Young Assignment Reporter Some students may have book smarts, but - because of lan guage barriers - they are afraid to go to college. The Vietnamese Student Association tried to reverse that fear Friday. Asian-American Recruitment Day, which was held Friday, gave VS A a chance to show prospec tive first-generation Asian American college students they have opportunities at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. “I feel it’s important to tell them it’s possible for them to make it up here,” said Eileen Vu, VS A president. The day started at 9 a.m. and finished at 2:30 p.m. Lincoln high school students sat in on classes, heard university offi cials speak and asked questions. VS A has had the recruitment day for about five years. Some of the students were able to attend chemistry instruc tor Bill McLaughlin’s class, Vu said. McLaughlin, who was awarded student government’s 1998 Outstanding Educator award, took the time after class to talk about the university and answer questions. “The real business of a uni versity happens in the class room,” McLaughlin said. After finding out all of the students’ names, McLaughlin explained college class structure and the high school background needed for science classes. That individual contact with prospective students is impor tant, he said. “You need to know there are places and people that care about you as an individual,” he said. Vu said the students benefited from McLaughlin’s efforts. “I wish all of the students would have had the chance to go to that class,” Vu said. The rest of the day included a campus tour and a social mixer with VSA members. About 39 students from Lincoln High School, Lincoln Northeast and Lincoln Pius X High School came to UNL for the day. VSA members also visit the students throughout the year. Members go to high schools and talk with students about col lege opportunities. The group co-sponsors events with high school students. VSA also plans to start a tutoring pro gram, Vu said. Because its resources are lim ited, VSA concentrates on the Lincoln area. However, it hopes the university will help with efforts to expand its recruiting boundaries, Vu said. “We really hope the campus community will be able to sup port us more.” Osborne, Huskers honored in ceremony OSBORNE from page 1 “The program is in great hands with Coach Solich.” Then Moeser took the micro phone for the dedication of Tom Osborne Field. “We are here to pay tribute to a great man,” Moeser said. “Championships build stadiums, but the game builds men.” Regent Allen then made the field’s new name official. The HuskerVision screens came to life again with a tribute video to Osborne, including sportscasters, fel low coaches and former players. When Osborne finally reached the podium, he used his time in a tra ditionally humble Osborne fashion: He thanked everyone involved with the program in any way for their help in his success. “Relationships are the things that count,” Osborne said. “It is the play ers, coaches and people I will remem ber. “I will never forget any of you.” The name “Tom Osborne” is now indelibly stamped across the sideline near the north and south end zones in brilliant Husker red, much the way he is stamped in the hearts of Nebraskans.
