Huskers dominate Blue Jays NU defeats in-state rivals 4-0 in last game By Darren Ivy Assignment Reporter Although the Nebraska women’s soccer team didn’t capitalize on as many scoring opportunities as it would have liked to Saturday against Creighton, there wasn’t any doubt to most of the 743 fans at the Abbott Sports Complex who the better team was. Nebraska outshot Creighton 26-3 and didn't allow any shots on goal en route to a 4-0 win in its final game of the spring season. But the Cornhuskers didn't put the game com pletely out of reach until they added two goals in the last 1:06 of the game. “It would have been nice to score a few more goals early,” said Kim Engesser, who scored two of NU's goals. “They felt they were still in it being down 1-0 at halftime. We dominated more in the second half.” Solid defense and a relentless offensive attack helped Nebraska defeat Creighton and finish the i spring season 2-2-1. Just 20 seconds into the game. NU had a chance to jump ahead, but sophomore Lindsay Eddleman kicked her shot over the crossbar. Eight minutes later, Engesser had a header j bounce off the crossbar. “You just have to try not to get frustrated,” Engesser said. Finally, sophomore Jenny Benson got NU on the board at 38:11. After receiving a pass from junior Tanya Wright, Benson juked her defender and then beat CU goalie Maggie Phelan with a shot. It was one of the few times NU beat Phelan in the game. “We had a lot of chances that we just were not able to cash in on in the first half,” Coach John Walker said. “But you have to give Creighton cred it because they just hung in there and would not go away.” In the second half, with the aid of a 30 mph northwest wind, Nebraska kept the ball in CU’s end nearly the entire half. Benson hit a crossing pass at the 55:11 mark, and Engesser got her second header under the bar to score NU’s second goal. But the teams went scoreless the next 33 min utes until freshman Christine Gluck and Engesser scored in the last 1:06. “We knew Creighton would give us a battle,” Walker said. “If we wouid have finished, we’d have been up three or four at halftime, but it was better for us that is was close ” After playing the top three teams in the country this spring, Engesser said it was good to end with Creighton. “It’s good for the team to end on a win.” I Matt Miller/DN NU’S KRISTEN GAY fights off Creighton’s Heather Houska Saturday night at the Abbott Sports Complex. The Huskers won 4-0 on the strength of a goal by Jenny Benson and Christine Gluck and two goals by Kim Engesser.
