Hatchell resignation likely DALLAS (AP) - Big 12 Commissioner Steve Hatchell plans to leave the 3-year-old con Hatched terence he helped form shortly after the league’s spring meetings. A source close to the sit uation told The Associated Press that Hatchell was being pressured to leave Decause oi management and staff problems at Big 12 headquarters. “I don’t know that I’m a par ticularly easy person to work for,” Hatchell said, adding that some employees in the Dallas office are probably justified in believing he was tough on them. Big 12 Chairman Ray Bowen denied Hatchell is being forced out. “It is certainly not a fact that this board is trying to push him r~ out,” Bowen said. “He is the com missioner and he, of his own free will, has decided to look at other opportunities.” Hatchell said he is being con sidered for a job with the Sait Lake City Olympic Organizing Committee, but would not discuss other possibilities. Among those being mentioned as possible replacements at the Big 12 are two athletic directors: Joe Castiglione at Missouri and Bob Frederick at Kansas. Frederick, a former chairman of the NCAA basketball tourna ment selection committee, fin ished runner-up to Hatchell when Big 12 presidents chose him as the league’s first commissioner. Hatchell was the Southwestern Conference commissioner at the time. Hatchell told radio station KLIF-AM the likely target date for his departure would be at the beginning of June or July. Bowen, the Texas A&M presi dent, said no one in the league office had specifically com plained to him about Hatchell’s conduct. “It’s a high-stress, high-pres sure job,” Bowen said during a conference call. “I don’t hear anybody whining about that, but they’ll tell you they are working themselves to death.” Other than Nebraska’s success in football, the Big 12 has not had great success on the field. However, the league - formed by a merger of the Big Eight and four Southwest Conference schools - has been a hit financially, signing television contracts valued at more than $150 million. Bowen said Hatchell told the league last month he was looking for other jobs. Hatchell said he wants the transition to a new com missioner tO go as smoothly as possible. “The Big 12 doesn’t want to miss a step, and I know that the presidents and the powers that be want to get a good person in here.” -- NU looks for 1st spring win By Darren Ivy Assignment Reporter On paper, the Nebraska women’s soccer team’s 7 p.m. game with Creighton Saturday at the Abbott Sports Complex may not look like a big game. NU, 1-3-1 this spring, has faced the Under 20 national team and the three top-ranked NCAA teams for its past four games. Creighton isn’t even ranked. They finished the fall season 9-7-2. But the Cornhuskers £§fi’t underestimate them, said NU sophomore Jenny Benson. “Just because they aren’t a top one or two team doesn’t mean they won’t give us a good game,” Benson said. “We definitely don’t want to lose to a team in the same state.” NU Coach John Walker said he is not familiar with Creighton’s cur rent team because the two teams haven’t met in three years. But NU Assistant Coach Megan Bechtold is familiar with the Blue Jays. When Bechtold played at Creighton from 1991-94, Creighton’s current head coach played on the men’s team. Her senior year was the first year NU had a soccer program. During that season, the two teams met twice with Creighton, coming but victorious in each game: But the gam^yere battles, Bechtold said. “You could tell they were going to be a great team,” Bechtold said. “I loved my four years of playing at Creighton. Now all I want is Nebraska to win.” During Bechtold’s first year at NU in 1995, Creighton defeated the Huskers 1-0. Since then, Nebraska has emerged as one of the top programs in the country. However, Bechtold still remem bers the 1995 game, and so do some of the older NU players. “There is a bit of an in-state rivalry,” Bechtold said. “It’s good for the state.” Benson wasn’t here for the last game, but she said Nebraska will be ready to play. “Knowing it’s our last gape, we are going to come out really fired up,” she said. Bechtold agreed that both teams will come out with a lot of adrena line. “I think we are ready to play,” Bechtold said. “We want to wrap up the spring with a good home game.” Greek Week ‘98 April 19th - 25th i Friday, April 24th J ■A11:00 am UPC Activities Begin onthe Greenspace east of ^2 W Stadium v| f 3:00 - 6:00 FAC @ P.O.
