Because the panelists have con
nections with Weidman, Bowlin
said, they will talk about more than
just facts about his life.
“They all know a lot of fun,
anecdotal stuff, and they will have a
lot of stories,” he said.
Part of the presentation uses a
video about Weidman, and Bowlin
said it helps the audience by giving
them visual elements of Weidman’s
choreography.
He encouraged people to come
and be a part of the discussion
because it is a chance to learn
something new.
“It’s a chance to learn about a
person who was so very important
in the evolution of modern dance,”
he said. “This is one of these gems
in Nebraska that a lot of people
don’t know about.”
He said he thought the event
would have more excitement than
most people might think.
“One can think it might be dry,
but I think it should be fun,” he
said. “This is a neat way to learn
about the early movement of mod
ern dance and also what is different
and unique about Weidman’s style
from others at that time.”
“Dance and the Work of Charles
Weidman” takes place Wednesday
at 3:30 p.m. A reception begins at 3
p.m.
The discussion will be held in
the Great Plains Art Collection in
Love Library.

Billy Strayhorn’s “Chelsea
Bridge,” arranged by Nestico.
Perhaps because two of
McConnell’s tunes are on the pro
gram, the saxophone section will
have more to do than normal,
Sharp said.
“Things Are Getting Better”
features a tricky saxophone solo
section where everyone in the sec
tion has a difficult part equivalent
to an improvisation, Sharp said. In
addition, there also is a short peri
od of collective improvisation
among the saxes in this piece.
“Queen Bee” is one of the more
fun pieces on die program for Sharp
because it was the first straight
ahead swing tune he ever learned in
junior high school, he said.
Also performing during the
Wednesday night concert is the
UNL Jazz Small Group. This
group features Cory Biggerstaff on
bass, Cain on tenor saxophone,

Rich Miller on drums, Nick
Phillips on piano, Andy Strain on
trombone and Valentine on guitar.
All are UNL undergraduate stu
dents, Sharp said.
The Jazz Small Group will play
Miles Davis’ “All Blues”;
Kohmetscher’s original composi
tion “Westbrook (Small Suite for
Jazz Band)” and Herbie Mann’s
“Memphis Underground.”
The overall program is fun to
listen to, Sharp said.
“People just need to come hear
this concert because if they do they
will realize how enjoyable listen
ing to jazz is,” Sharp said. “A lot of
this music will make the listener
want to tap their foot.”
Rusty White, usual Jazz
Ensemble conductor, had another
gig to play this weekend, which put
Sharp in the unusual position of
being a last-minute substitute con
ductor.
But filling is not all that diffi
cult, Sharp said.
“All I do is come in and say
‘go.’ They’ve already done all the
work. I’m just there to guide (the
Jazz Ensemble),” Sharp said.
“Unless I make a major mis
take, I can’t possibly screw them
up. They already know how it
goes.”
Some of the ensemble mem
bers really seem to enjoy his pres
ence, Sharp said.
“The kids like having different
conductors because it increases
their musical range,” he said.
The UNL Jazz Ensemble and
Jazz Small Group concert is
tonight at 8 in Westbrook Recital
Hall. Admission is free.
