Wind Ensemble chosen to play at elite convention ENSEMBLE from page 12 Kloecker said. “It’s a ridicu lously difficult piece for the soloist, a real tour-de-force.” The Friday performance is for the general session of the MENC and will follow a keynote address by famed com poser, writer and conductor Gunther Schuller, Kloecker said. The Friday performance fea tures the world and Big-12 Consortium premiere of Charles Rochester Young’s “Tempered Steel,” the Danse Sacre movement from Jean Michel Defaye’s “Deux Danses” and Thomas Knox’s “Sea Songs,” originally written for the U. S. Marine Band to perform at the city of Boston’s Bicentennial in 1980. Kloecker said “Tempered Steel” was written “to be acces sible for all good college bands, not just the upper echelon. It features heavy use of metal per cussion instruments and alludes to ‘the bold resolve to face life’s challenges,’ according to Knox,” Kloecker said. In addition, Knox will be in Phoenix and plans to work with the Wind Ensemble on his piece, Kloecker said. Kloecker also praised fellow director Chesnutt, both for his conducting and his setting of the Defaye Danse Sacre move ment from “Deux Danses.” “It’s a brand new setting for trombone and winds, and Scott (Anderson) plays it very well,” Kloecker said. The UNL Wind Ensemble will return to Lincoln on Saturday, Kloecker said, and get back to work. The Wind Ensemble will perform for its home crowd April 24. Students to give new works concert From Staff Reports Composition students of Tyler White, assistant professor of music, and Randall Snyder, professor of theory and composition, will present new works for various combinations of instruments tonight. This performance, entitled “The Music of Student Composers,” features pieces composed by both graduate and undergraduate composers currently in residence at the University ofNebraska Lincoln. The program includes graduate stu dent Sarah Vaughan’s “Two Poems for Children,” written for her daughter; cel list Sadie Slack; and a chorus consisting ofLindsay Aherns, Erica Brennan, Sarah Heikel, Karri McQueen and Talia Tieso. It also includes doctoral student Jean Henderson’s “Ricercar,” written for a string quartet comprised of Christine Bachinsky, violin; Henderson, violin; Bruce Johnson, viola and Susan Wagner, cello. Also in the program is doctoral stu dent Raphael Mevorach’s “Flute Duet,” composed in 1980 and performed by flutists Deena Reedy and Vanessa Bauman; junior Eric Smith’s “Sonata” for trumpet, performed by Michael Nass; freshman Annemarie Wilson’s cello trio “Winter Sketch,” performed by Susan Wilson, Elizabeth Schuller and Jennifer Rudisill; senior Jason Carper’s marimba solo “Perpetual Energy,” performed by Carper. Finally, the program will also include senior Jon “Sweet Basil McJagger” Jamison’s mariachi-fla vored composition “La Paloma, or I Can’t Believe She Ate the Whole Thing,” performed by Mister Righteous, tenor, Cindy Theiszen and Lisa Lambelet, trumpets; Cory Biggerstaff, bass; and Jamison, accor dion. The concert will start tonight at 8 in Kimball Recital Hall. Admission is free. Performance to present Indian culture RAAG from page 12 feature another person on percussion. He said the music had a lot of history and was considered very sacred. One legend describes a man named Tansen, who was considered one of the best classical Indian musi cians. Apparently his music “was so expressive it could make the rain come down and the fire start,” Nag said. He said he is proud to be able to help bring a living legend like Sharma to Lincoln. He said it was only made possible through the coop eration of die members of Raag. Srivastav said another great thing about the concert is that it costs only $5. In other parts of the world, Sharma concerts are much more expensive. “I myself have paid $30, and I was sitting in the back row with binoculars,” Srivastav said. Nag said that offering inexpen sive tickets to such a top quality show makes him very proud. “We are very excited about the show,” Nag said. “We make it possi ble for students to come in and expe rience this music.” The concert is at the Westbrook Music Hall. Admission is $5 for stu dents and $10 for adults. The concert starts at 7 p.m. 200s For sale &Xj* _ - ,^BPr^ Ride the Wave All 1998 Kona Mountain Bikes on Sale.
