Caroline’s Spine to anchor concert SPINE from page 9 band would receive that kind of success with open arms. “That would be cool, “he said. I certainly wouldn’t mind to have huge success, but it’s not the reason we’re doing this. “We’re basically doing it for the love of music.” He said he thought the band had the potential for commercial success, but he’d be happy whether or not they got it “I think that we have a good poten tial for becoming big,” Jones said. “We want to be big, but if it didn’t happen it wouldn’t be like, ‘Damn, we’re not the biggest band this year.’” He said the band planned to contin ue touring for the next few months and would release “Wallflower” as die sec ond single from “Monsoon” in a few months. Depending on the success of “Wallflower,” the band might go into the studio to record again or continue touring to support “Monsoon.” Jones said he thought recording was important, but ultimately it was die live performances that turned people onto Caroline’s Spine. He said that was why the band members poured all then energy into touring. “It’s very intense and exhausting. It’s a nonstop ride through madness for an hour and a half,” Jones said. “It’s like we separate ourselves and get into our music as much as possible.” Saturday’s 19-and-over show starts at 9 p.m. and costs $5. Nebraska Brass musicians to play Bach, Beatles tunes From Staff Reports Lincoln is going to get crazy brass tonight. The Nebraska Brass, a brass quin tet comprised of musicians with jazz and classical experience, will perform at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2110 Sheridan Blvd, at 7:30 p.m. The show is titled “From Bach to Beatles” and features - as its name would indicate - a number of both Bach and Beatles tunes. To perform the Beatles songs, the quintet had to enlist a percussionist, Lincoln resident John Scofield. The original lineup includes Dean Haist and Brad Obbink on trumpet, Mark Mendell on trombone, Ric Ricker on horn and John Thomason on tuba. Tickets for tonight’s concert are $10 for adults, $7 for senior citizens and $5 for students. Piano Day to educate high school musicians By Barb Churchill Assignment Reporter So many pianists, so little time. That’s the attitude of UNL piano professors Nicole Narboni, Mark Clinton, Ann Chang-Bames and Paul Barnes. In order to facilitate this wel come surplus they have come up with Piano Day at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Piano Day was intended for high school-age pianists in grades nine through 12. However, parents and teachers, as well as other inter ested parties, are encouraged to attend, Narboni said. “It’s an opportunity for students interested in music as a degree pro gram,” she said. Call it “music major for a day,” she said. Narboni, an assistant professor of music at UNL, has been instru mental in coordinating Piano Day festivities. Narboni said she understands how much work it takes to be a high-quality pianist, as she holds degrees from the University of Texas at Austin, Rice University and the Peabody Conservatory of Music. “We’re looking forward to meeting the students and parents,” Narboni said. “Being a pianist takes a lot of hard work and effort, and these students, by coming to tt-V, These students, by coming to Piano Day; are taking their first steps along that journey ” Nicole Narboni piano professor Piano Day, are taking their first steps along that journey.” Some of the activities planned for Piano Day include masterclass es with UNL piano faculty mem bers, a tour of the School of Music and a round-table discussion titled “What It Takes To Be a Music Major at UNL.” Participants also will have lunch with UNL faculty members and students and attend a recital by current piano majors. Students performing at the recital include Kathryn Koscho, Jon Haupt, Rachelle Winkle, Nicholas Phillips, Karl Graber and Susanna Lee. The students will per form works from Scriabin, Chopin, Copland, Ginastera and Schumann. Piano Day at UNL starts at 9 a.m. and continues until 4 p.m. in the Westbrook Music Building.
