Lincoln band to bang out
interpretive tribute show
By Jason Hardy
Senior Reporter
The local band HOWLOOSEA
, NATION consists of four people: an
aerial photographer, an eye surgeon,
an anthropologist and a Bohemian.
Think that’s weird?
The band’s instruments include
outdated electronic musical mecha
nisms, like theremins and Moogs, as
well as things like oil cans, plastic
tubing and a coffee can here and
there.
Tonight HOWLOOSEANATION
will perform the music of Weldon
Kees at the Sheldon Memorial Art
Gallery, 12th and R streets.
Marie Baldridge, frontman for the
group, said tonight’s performance
would be a combination of Kees’
music and HOWLOOSEANATION’s
own musical creations.
;; “Some of it we’ve taken his lyrics
and set diem to music of our own and
others we’re doing straight,”
Baldridge said.
He said the group wasn’t familiar
with Kees’ work before taking on this
project, so adapting it into a musical
performance was challenging.
“It’s been a challenge, but I think
we’ve got a lot out of it,” Baldridge
said. “We’ve grown as musicians and
we’ve kind of picked up musical
forms from this that we wouldn’t
have had.”
He said that although they would
be playing another person’s material,
HOWLOOSEANATION’s input
would be obvious.
“There will always be an element
of chaos and randomness to our per
formances because that’s what we
really like,” Baldridge said.
Ed Rumbaugh, percussionist for
the band, said the performance would
be a stripped-down representation of
Rees’ work, while still staying true to
his original intent.
“We’re going to present his music
in an almost naive way,” Rumbaugh
said. “We’ve taken the music and
minimized it
“We’re interested in the spontane
ity that happens when you get a
bunch of people together, and that’s
what we feel Weldon Rees was all
about. I think the essence of Weldon
Rees will come through.”
The performance at the Sheldon
is free and will start around 5 tonight.
