UNL band plans tribute to Sousa SOUSA from page 9 Guiseppe Verdi, one of the giants among Italian opera composers of the 19* century. Soprano soloist Vena Genuchi Alesio will sing the arias from “La Traviata.” Alesio is the head of the music department and chair of the humanities division at Southeast Community College in Beatrice. Alesio earned her bachelor’s degree at Texas Tech University, her master’s degree at UNL and her doctorate in fine arts at Texas Tech University. In the case of the third soloist, it isn’t the pieces so much that are histor ically significant. It’s the instrument. The saxophone was invented in 1840 by Adolphe Sax in Belgium. By 1928, the saxophone had gained a wide following, mainly because of its excellent tone quality and ease of tech nique. However, most of the important works for saxophone had not yet been written because the saxophone was still a comparatively new instrument. Joseph De Luca’s “Beautiful Colorado” and Maurice Whitney’s “Introduction and Samba” are typical programmatic saxophone pieces. They are virtuosic show stoppers that show off the technical edacity of the saxophone as well as its ability to play lyrically. Alto saxophone soloist Lynn Klock performs in the United States and Europe. Klock is professor of saxophone at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and is saxo phonist and bass clarinetist with the Springfield Symphony Orchestra. Klock is an active recitalist who performs throughout the United States and Europe and has premiered more than 30 solo works written for and ded icated to him. Klock holds degrees from the University of Michigan and the Interlochen Arts Academy. To cap off the concert, the UNL Symphonic Band will perform “Stars and Stripes Forever^’ in its traditional Sousa-band form. The piccolo section will solo in front of the band, then the trumpets and trombones will come out of the band and try to top them. It will stir patriotic feelings in the weakest of hearts, Kloecker said. The “Salute to Sousa” concert is Saturday night at 8 in the Lied Center. Ticket prices are $12, $8 for students with a student I.D. Don't Miss This Special!!!
