Rap artist’s violent lyrics
violate parole, police say
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - A
rap artist convicted on firearms charges
in a 1994 shooting is back in jail
because authorities say anti-police
lyrics on his latest album violate condi
tions of his parole.
Shawn Thomas, who records under
the name C-Bo, was arrested Tuesday
and held without bail while the state
Board of Prison Terms considers the
case. Punishment ranges from admon
ishment to a year in jail.
He is charged with threatening pub
lic officials, promoting violence against
public officials, promoting a gang
lifestyle, criminal behavior and vio
lence against law enforcement
In the song “Deadly Game” from
the record “Til My Casket Drops” - due
out next week from AWOL Records -
Thomas raps: “When they try to pull
you over, shoot ‘em in the face, y’jplj.” \
Other lyrics threaten the
Sacramento County district attorney,
the Sacramento sheriff, a police officer
and a county probation officer, state
Department of Corrections spokesman
lip Kendall said.
Thomas was convicted of illegal
use of a firearm in a gang shooting that
led to one man’s death. He was paroled
once, arrested on a violation, reincar
cerated, then paroled again last year on
condition he do nothing to promote a
Thomas’ attorney, John Duree, said
die new arrest violates Thomas’right to
free speech. But Kendall said Thomas’
criminal past excludes him from First
ARTIST from page 9
But one of the best things about
outtakes and rarities compilations is
the presence of out-of-the-ordinary
material. On “Crystal Ball,” that
presence is best represented by “The
Ride,” a song that is as full of the
blues as anything Muddy Waters
ever touched, and “Cloreen Bacon
Skin,” an entirely improvised record
ing made by The Artist and Morris
Day during the recording of The
Time’s “What Time Is It?”
“The Truth,” The Artist’s first
ever acoustic recording, stands along
with these tracks as a testament not
only to The Artist’s creativity, but to
his willingness to experiment with
his music; no matter the result.
Overall, “Crystal Ball” is, a
worthwhile look at The Artisf’p j
career to this point, and a glimpse
into his future. And after listening to
this album, one is bound to hope it
stays as bright as it has been for
many years to come.
