    NU looks for pivotal win
By Lisa Vonnahme
Staff Reporter
It’s hard for some to be away
from home.
Such is the case for the
Missouri
Tigers, who
have lost their
last 21 road
games.
And the
Nebraska
men’s basket
ball team
hopes to take
advantage of
that tonight.
The
Cornhuskers (15-10 overall and
6-6 in the Big 12 Conference)
seek to avenge an 81-76 over
time loss Feb. 4 in Columbia,
Mo., when they take on the
Tigers (14-11 and 6-6) at 7:05
p.m. at the Bob Devaney Sports
Center.
“It’s contagious in the coun
try,” NU Coach Danny Nee said.
“You can pick on Missouri, but
everyone has the same problem.
It’s very difficult to win on the
road.”
The Huskers, who are com
ing off two straight wins, will
use that momentqm and the
home-court advantage against
Missouri. «
Bat Nebraska won’t be feel
ing sorry for the Tigers and
Coach Norm Stewart, Nee said.
In 31 years, Stewart is 11-10 at
the Devaney Center.
In Columbia earlier this sea
son, the Huskers were led by
point guard Tyronn Lue, who
scored 26 points. But Lue isn’t
the only Husker who poses a
threat, Stewart said.
The Tigers will look to ham
per the play of NU forward
Larry Florence, who scored 19
points in Columbia two weeks
ago - one point shy of his career
high. The junior also played a
career-high 37 minutes.
“Larry’s been playing hard,
playing aggressive and taking
the right shots,” NU point guard
Tyronn Lue said. “That’s proba
bly the key to our last few wins.”
Making good decisions,
recovering from a knee injury
and working hard in practice are
what have made the difference
in Florence’s play.
“Florence had such a good
game down here,” Stewart said.
“We’ve got to do a better job on
him.”
Nebraska, on the other hand,
will look to stop center Monte
Hardge. The 6-foot-11 junior
had one of his best perfor
mances of the season against
NU earlier this season with 17
points and 15 rebounds.
“It’s hard to front him
because of his size and
strength,” Nee said. “It’s not an
easy task.”
A win tonight would'keep
either team in a tie for fourth
place in the conference.
“The whole focus is that we
think Missouri is coming in like
us,” Nee said. “Everybody has
to win their share. Both teams
need it badly.”

Family of Caray
hopes for ‘miracle’
RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. (AP)
- Longtime Chicago Cubs broadcast
er Harry Caray remained uncon
scious and in critical condition
TUesday, and a spokesman and family
friend said the family is “hoping for
another miracle.”
“Things do not look good,” Bill
Wills said. “However, in Harry’s past,
there have been many times when
things did not look good for recovery,
and he’s beaten them every time.”
Tests taken at Eisenhower
Medical Center, where the 78-year
old Caray was taken following a fall
at a nightclub Saturday night,
revealed that the “prognosis for func
tional recovery is poor,” Wills said,
quoting doctors.
“The medical terminology for
this is hypoxic ischemic
encephalopathy - doctors call it
HIE,” Wills said.
“Harry ’s condition continues as
critical; his body signs continue to be
stable.” '/
Caray collapsed Saturday night
after his heart suddenly changed
rhythm, which seriously affected his
circulation and die supply of oxygen
to his brain,
“The family is holding up fairly
well,” Wills said. “His wife, Dutchie,
is a very strong individual, much like
Harry. She also has religion to lean
on - she believes in the power of
prayer.”
Wills, a friend of Caray’s since
1982, said he remembered being in
another hospital exactly 11 years ago
-Feb. 17,1987 - when Caray had a
stroke.
“I wouldn’t have given you a
plugged nickel for his chances to
walk out of that hospital, much less
return to the announcing booth,”
Wills said. “However, I was proven
wrong on both guesses. So I certainly
wouldn’t try to guess today. We have
to hope for the best.”
Hie Hall of Fame broadcaster has
been unconscious and breathing with
the help of a ventilator since being
admitted to the hospital, Wills said. '
