4 Diversity in History j ^ Editor’s note: Each day during Black History Month, the Daily Nebraskan ' J* will tell the story of a minority who made an important contribution in America’s History. i Because, in 1892, she helped organize the Colored Women’s League of Washington, D.C., which i advocated equal rights for women and black Americans; Because she later stregthened the league to create the National Association of Colored Women with the motto “Lifting As They Climb,’ and its goal of assisting # poor and illiterate blacks; S Because she was the first black woman appointed to the Washington, D.C., Board of Education inJ895 and served on the board for 16 years; ■ Because she gained an international reputation for her political voice in speaking against discrimination and racism and addressing the International Council of Women in Germany in 1905; Because she was the only American delegate who could speak a language other than English and addressed the crowd in English, French, and German; Because she used her light complexion to be served in the “whites only” section of restaurants then demanded to know why other blacks weren’t afforded the same service; Because she founded a law established during the Reconstruction that ordered restaurants to serve “any respectable, well-behaved person’ or lose their license, and later filed a lawsuit; Because the Supreme Court decided the lawsuit in her favor in 1953; Mary Church Terrell is recognized as an early champion of women’s rights and an active demonstrator for racial equality before her death in 1954-just a few months prior to the U.S. Supreme Court declaring the practice of segregation unconstitutional. bormer student claims bias EGAN from page 1 receive free tuition from Veterans Affairs, but would not have paid for his room and board expenses. Reshell Ray, in the office of Student Involvement, and Baack, along with Phrommany, discovered the MLC and the ULC were being planned for the same day. Baack said the trio decided it would be a good idea to merge, so they approached the planning committees.
