New Yorker joins Conde Nast Publications chain NEW YORK (AP) - Eustace Tilley, the top-hatted, monocled sym bol of old New York who sits atop the masthead of The New Yorker, is get ting some trendy new neighbors: GQ, Vogue and Vanity Fair, to name a few. Next January, S.I. Newhouse Jr. will bring the distinguished but money-losing weekly into his Conde Nast Publications chain. The New Yorker, which has oper ated independently since Newhouse bought it in 1985, also will move its editorial offices to the new 48-story Conde Nast building being construct ed in Times Square. By consolidating advertising operations “we’ll be able to cut costs where we’re really able to make it into black,” Tina Brown, editor, said. Brown took over the 73-year-old literary and current-events magazine with much fanfare in 1992. Since then, she has updated the magazine, maintaining a literary focus while adding photographs, beefing up cov erage of politics and popular culture, and shortening articles. Many have wondered whether such a staid institution can be prof itable in today’s media market. From 1985, when Newhouse bought The New Yorker, until 1993, when Tom Florio took over as presi dent of the magazine, it lost more money every year, Florio said. “What we have done is reverse the trend by managing the revenue and creating a better editorial product.” ueenj ©W8 Lie, , fcrtMAtr _6ftp£Ubafe WHAT'S youR DEM? Their characters never consummate their affair on screen, leaving them to imply passion through their expressions alone. They do so admirably. Other standouts include Cox, who portrays IRA leader Joe Hamill as a complex personality dedicated to continuing the war if he must but actively desiring peace. McSorley is completely evil as Harry, and Stott gives life and breadth to his role as the once and future boxing coach Ike Weir. “The Boxer” is an excellent film about love, loss and redemp -_j hm Facts Mji Tide: "The Boxer' Stars: Daniel Day-Lewis, Emily Watson, Brian Cox, Ken Stott, Gerald McSorley Director: Jim Sheridan Rating: R Grade: A Five Words: Boxer delivers a knockout punch. tion.
