certain people, and you sometimes

others, you speak and communicate
well.”
“Out on a Whim” is a bit unusual
for a jazz album, as it features mostly
original compositions by Oxman and
his sidemen. Most jazz releases fea
ture several jazz standards.
But “Out on a Whim” features 10
songs written by musicians who per
form on the album.
One track, “The Tree Has Fallen
(But The Roots Will Live Forever),”
was written by White for his father,
Grady White Sr. The song was com
posed in February 1996, the month
White’s father died.
“Keith wanted to do something
different; create his own identity, his
own sound,” White said. “He also
wanted to expose our compositional
skills and play more original music
instead of typical jazz standards.”
White said he looks forward to his
March recital. He will perform dou
ble duty, playing three classical
pieces and several jazz tunes.
“As well as playing three pieces
that I really love, it’s an opportunity
for me to be reunited with some of the
best jazz musicians I’ve ever played
with,” White said.
White said he has enjoyed his
experience so far at UNL.
“I’ve felt pretty much at home
here in Lincoln,” he said. “The stu
dents have been outstanding.
Everything’s been great, and I expect
it to continue that way, actually.”

Keith Oxman
“Out on a Whim”
Capri Records
Grade: A
“Out on a Whim” is an excellent
jazz album, which represents post
bop, traditional, third-stream and
more experimental forms of jazz, all
in the album’s 70 minutes.
“Whim” is the third release from
Capri Records of tenor saxophonist
Keith Oxman’s quintet (which fea
tures University of Nebraska
Lincoln assistant professor of trum
pet Darryl White).
One unusual thing about this
album is that there are only two stan
dards. The first, “Strike up the
Band,” was written by George
Gershwin and is often played by
concert bands hs an opening fanfare.
Oxman plays this tune only with
drummer Mike Whited. This novel
approach frees Oxman to play an
inspired, technical improvisation
that quotes from jazz saxophonist
Charlie Parker, among others.
Although short, this is the best
straight-ahead tune on the album.
The other standard, “In a
Sentimental Mood” by bandleader
Duke Ellington, was too reverent.
On it, Oxman plays so romantically
that one can see the champagne,
roses and Ghirardelli chocolates.
However, all is forgiven once
you get to the best track on the
album, Darryl White’s own “The
Tree Has Fallen (But The Roots Will
Live Forever).”
This tune fits into third-stream
jazz, a la the Miles Davis/Gil Evans
“Sketches of Spain.” But that com
parison fails to convey the power and
brilliance of White’s composition.
Quite simply, “The Tree Has Fallen”
is a masterfUl jazz composition, wor
thy of inclusion by any jazz great.
Other standouts on the album
include “In These Perilous Times,”
written by Andy Weyl; “Red Alert,”
written by Oxman; and “Out on a
Whim ” written by Mike Whited.
Although all of the musicians on
this release are good, Oxman and
White in particular show off their
phenomenal expressive, technical
and dynamic ranges. If there is any
justrce in this world, both will
become stars in the jazz firmament.
