Swimmers win Triangular
The seventh-ranked Nebraska
women’s swimming team captured the
Nebraska/Minnesota/Texas A&M
Triangular Saturday in Lincoln. The
Comhuskers defeated Texas A&M 236
134 and downed Minnesota 194-176.
The 10tfa-ranked Golden Gophers
took second, outscoring Texas A&M
225-145. Nebraska improved to 5-0
overall
The Huskers’ Lenka Manhalova led
the women with a first-place finish in
the 200-yard individual medley and a
second-place finish in the 200-yard
breaststroke.
Manhalova also swam on NUfe win
ning 200-yard medley relay.
Therese Alshammar won the 100
yard freestyle and also swam in the 200
yard medley relay.
Amanda Zins won the 3-meter div
ing competition with 304.7 points and
placed third in die 1-meter contest
The 16th-ranked Comhusker men
placed second in the meet, defeating
A&M 234-134 but falling 230-140 to
15th-ranked Minnesota, which won the
meet
Adam Pine and Valajis Kalmikovs
paced the men. Pine captured the 100
yard freestyle.
Kalmikovs won the 200-yard
breaststroke and the 200-yard individ
ual medley.
Danny Bergman won the 1-meter
diving competition and placed third in
the 3-meter competition.

Nebraska will compete at Kansas
Friday and at Missouri Saturday.
Buskers place second at Open
The Rocky Mountain Open provid
ed some peaks and valleys for the
Nebraska men’s gymnastics team last
weekend
Derek Leiter and Jim Koziol turned
in first-place efforts, but injuries to
Jason Hardabura and Marshall Nelson
two of NU’s top gymnasts - were too
much for the Comhuskers to overcome
as No. 17 Brigham Young won the
seven-team meet with a score of226.00.
The sixth-ranked Huskers finished sec
ond with a score of224.18.
NU Coach Francis Allen said the
hip injury to Hardabura during warm
ups took the wind out of his team.
“We were hurt by Jason’s absence,”
Allen said “He is one of 010* top three
all-arounders and he was only able to
compete on rings for us. His injury was
a three-point swing, and we didn’t have
the depth to compensate for losing a
gymnast who can average a 57.”
One athlete who did his best to com
pensate was Leiter, a sophomore from
Lincoln Southeast Leiter won the all
around with a score of 57.48 while
recording career bests in the vault (9.70)
and horizontal bars (9.83).
Another top performance was
turned in by Koziol on the still rings. His
9.70 outdistanced second-place Dan
Fink of Oklahoma. Koziol’s perfor
mance was good news for NU after he
missed all of last season following
shoulder surgery.
Even though the Huskers didn’t
meet their goal of winning die meet,
Allen said it was good to be competing
again.
“We are not in that bad of shape, and
we will be a lot better when Marshall
and Jason get healthy.”

Wrestlers fall flat on the mat
The fifth-ranked Nebfafeka
wrestling team fell to No. 7 Oklahoma
20-15 Sunday at the Mini Dome in
South Sioux City.
OU improved to 10-5, while the
Comhuskers dropped to 7-4.
Entering the heavyweight match,
Nebraska trailed 17-15 until
Oklahoma’s John Henry Ward put the
Huskers away with a 10-4 decision over
J.R. Plienis.
“I don’t like losing to anybody,
much less a Big 12 opponent,”
Nebraska Coach Tim Neumann said.
“There were some reasons why \^e
wrestled flat, but I thought we would be
mentally tough enough to fight through
it But dbviousfy we weren’t”
NU junior Jose DeAnda, who wres
tled in the Mini Dome for the first time
since high school, fell to fifth-ranked
David Kjeldgaard at 142 pounds.
The Huskers hit the mats agAid
Sunday, when they travel to Ames, Iowa
to face ninth-ranked Iowa State.
