“This was just a shootout,” Texas
Coach Tom Penders said. “It was the
kind of game that showed just how
good Big 12 basketball is.”
In addition to Lue, Nebraska’s
quick start was also aided by the
Huskers’ ability to shred the zone
defense that Texas opened the game
with. NU found holes in the zone with
ease, and jumped out to a 40-30 lead
with five minutes to play in the half.
But Texas then instituted a man
to-man defense, which allowed the
Longhorns to gain much-needed
momentum before halftime. In what
proved to be a pivotal point in the
contest, Texas scored the final nine
points of the half to close the gap to
4443.
“It was my brain-dead plan to try
a zone on them,” Penders said.
“Finally, we went to our trapping,
rotating defense, and that got us
going.”
