Bill would put phonics to work in classrooms PHONICS from page 1 her children who attended elemen tary school in Iowa was ahead of her younger child who six years later took the same classes in Omaha but wasn’t learning at the same level as the other child. Witek said the problem with read ing instruction now is the inconsis tency - meaning what one teacher teaches one year to a student might not be the same information or in the same format as the student’s next teacher. Because of this problem, Witek said, many parents have bought a phonics game that has been adver tised on the radio. “It is cruel to keep parents and students in the dark about reading instruction,” she said. “If they would only take 15 to 20 minutes out of their schedule a day, it would make a tremendous difference.” In her hands, Witek had 30 letters from parents, teachers and others who also supported the bill. Despite Witek’s support, Hastings Sen. Ardyce Bohlke, Education Committee Chairwoman, said she had heard from parents who were concerned about children who read at a higher level than their present grade, but still would have to take part in die phonics program. However, she said teachers should be able to recognize students’ individuality and make adjustments for those students, such as giving them other reading materials. Sharon Gotez, a fourth-grade teacher at Omaha’s Field Club Elementary School, said she started teaching phonics in her classroom this school year, and most of her stu dents are earning 95-100 percent scores oh their spelling tests each week. “I always hear that the students love it,” she said. Doug Evans, Lincoln Public School system board member, said he opposed the bill because he doesn’t agree with mandates. “1 think this is a dangerous prece dent. I think it is wrong for the Legislature to tell people how to teach,” he said. Schools are already pushing for more modem, alternative teaching styles in LPS, Evans said. The board members have asked teachers to be more active this year in teaching the reading curriculum, and in some cases that might include phonics, but he said he doesn’t think phonics should be expected. Correction Jon Frank should have been credited with yesterday’s front page gas graphic. ^xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx: ^ g BEAR . | h A Healthy Smile — h p A Lifetime Choice h P That Shows Your Style! > 5 P University Health Center ^ P Dental Office 15th & U ^ P Call for appointments • 417-7495 Ej ftxxxxxxixxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxil _ _. . ., „ . , . _ „ _. _ ...... , _. .....
