non-musicians alike.”
The “Concertino,” by Erwin
Schulhoff, features the unusual instru
mental mix of flute (doubling on pic
colo), viola and double bass.
Another highlight is the first fac
ulty chamber music appearance of
Darryl White, assistant professor of
trumpet, along with the resuscitated
UNL Faculty Brass Quintet.
White, who is proficient in both
jazz and classical idioms, is a fairly
recent addition to the UNL School of
Music. This is his second semester.
White said the faculty wanted a
brass quintet, but didn’t have one.
When White auditioned for the trum
pet position in 1997, he was asked
whether or not he wanted to play in a
brass quintet and what experience he
had.
White didn’t lack experience, as
he had played in several brass quin
tets, including the Aries Quintet (in
residence at the University of
Denver).
White said “Elegy and Dance” is a
classical piece that evokes the jazz tra
dition.
“It’s in one movement, with cuts
back and forth from the ‘Elegy,’ which
is similar to a jazz ballad, to the
‘Dance,’ which is very playful and
features much interplay between the
instruments,” he said.
The concert closes with two
movements from the “Quartet in E
flat major,” (op. 47) by Robert
Schumann.'
Potter said the Andante movement
contains “one of the most beautiful
melodies ever written.”
“And if you aren’t moved by this,
if you don’t feel anything, we’d better
check for a pulse,” he said.
Potter characterized the finale
movement of the “Quartet” as a
“cheerful, fast, frantic, furious fugue.”
Tonight’s concert will be of inter
est even to students who aren’t in the
School of Music, he said; but for those
students who do roam the halls of
Westbrook Music Building daily,
there may be extra motivation for
attending: keeping the professors hon
est.
“Come see what the music faculty
is up to,” he said. “Come see if we do
what we tell the students to do.”
Band looks to reclaim rock reign
RELEASE from page 9
album at Fort Apache Studios.
But after waiting nearly half a
year for word from the studio, Mercy
Rule finally got the message: Sorry.
However, the band quickly
responded by buying the rights to the
album and bringing it back home to
the label that got Mercy Rule started
- Caulfield Records.
Now, after all the disappoint
ments, legal wrangling and frustrat
ing delays, Mercy Rule can finally
reclaim its local rock reign.
Featuring a bright studio sheen
thanks to the help of indie-rock glaz
er Giordano, the release is a mixed
blend of signature guitar crunch and
near-symphonic constructions,
incorporating everything from the
tambourine to the saxophone to the
piano.
“There is a lot of variety,” Taylor
said. “It’s just a hundred times better
than any of our previous stuff.”
The production of the album,
expected to be in the stores before
Christmas, has undergone a few
delays because of contract negotia
tions with MCA, said bassist Heidi
Ore.
Although Mercy Rule has had the

compact discs since early December,
tonight’s show is its first opportunity
to make them available to die public.
However, these delays haven’t
been entirely resolved yet, and the
compact discs available at tonight’s
show are advance copies, which
means the liner notes aren’t includ
ed.
“Discs available (Wednesday) are
advanced copies and the (cover art)
can be traded in for the real thing
which should be in the next couple
weeks,” Ore said.
It’s doubtful anyone will care.
Mercy Rule is the beloved darling of
Lincoln’s college rock community,
and the band cherishes its status.
“I think having been at most lev
els of the music industry, I think I
know our band and that this is the
level we will probably excel and be
able to continue at our best,” Taylor
said.
“It’s a thrill to be back at this
level.”
