There has been much written about Hopkins’ chances for an Academy Award nomination, and he would indeed be worth considering. Yet all of the actors in “Amistad” give compelling performances with realistic amounts of personal growth. In the hands of a lesser actor than Matthew McConaughey, attorney Roger Baldwin could easily have been portrayed as a bumpkin or a recluse. Instead McConaughey shows us a than who is enriched by the struggle of See ing Cinque and the other West Africans. McConaughey shows us a real man with real problems who isn’t afraid to grow or change despite extensive oppo sition, which is a far cry from his “pret ty boy” role in the movie “Contact” Morgan Freeman also does a typi cally great job as Joadson, an abolition ist and former slave. By showing the audience a successful ex-slave fighting for die unjustly captured West Africans, Spielberg encapsulates the basic prob lem of slavery and the slave-holding attitude. Freeman enlivens every scene with dignity, wisdom and restraint Djimon Hounsou is to be com mended, because Cinque could have easily turned into just another clichg of the “exploited black man.” Instead, we see Cinque mourning the loss of the Spanish captors despite their venality and struggling to lead his people despite his lack of faith in himself. Hounsou gives Cinque intelligence, pride and passion. Hounsou is so good that it’s hard to believe “Amistad” is his first major motion picture. “Amistad” isn’t an easy film to fol low in spots; for one thing, the Africans speak in their own language, Mende, most of the time, and subtitles aren’t always given. Some scenes drag on too long. The film is unmistakably violent, which makes it unsuitable for young children or those without strong stom achs. However, “Amistad” succeeds on its own terms by starkly illuminating one of the worst and most shameful periods in American history. See this film. It is a prime example of why the Martin Luther King Jl holiday should be cele brated in America. p®* I i i ,\ . 1 J. * - - : | - * lh *j \ \ __k ■». jjii | , ; f t > , - K J ‘ ^ > v- ' „ 1 * r 1- „ r , ' -'r 'A, *' "' ^VIvviIjih v t d »11 Jil I *J iji ^4I »TJ ■ ■ I ; ||l : I ^CTK^^jKyy^^^^^yiHyiyy^teik^uysyyHi^yy^^Ajii^yyiyiA^y^i^ifiMj^ijyyii^E •IlH'ffi. Chasek also has helped to support the local music scene by having 15 : shows at his house last summer, he said. Bands from all over the United States played alongside his friends’ bands, and getting to meet the people in the other bands made for some great experiences, he said. “That’s part of the reason that it makes it fun to own Zero Street, because I get their records in and go, ; ‘Holy mofy, these guys played at my house, slept on my floor, and these guys hung out and we talked about girls all night long,’” Chasek said. Chasek said he hoped the store would become a place where people come to hang out and buy music. “I can generally say that I like this job a lot,” he said. “It’s so cool to ji come here and make people 1 selling them the music that
