EDITOR Paula Lavigne OPINION EDITOR Joshua Gillin EDITORIAL BOARD Brad Davis Erin Gibson Shannon HefFelfinger Chad Lorenz Jeff Randall i Our VIEW Unfair evacuation Fraternity treated with disrespect In the midst of the holiday season, most people expect to get surprises in the mail. But for one group of University of Nebraska-Lincoln stu dents, a surprise arrived that eclipsed even the most daunting cheese log or the most weighty fruitcake. Those students were members of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, and their sur prise came in the form of a letter telling them their house was closed, and their charter was suspended. No reason was given for these actions. It was only a couple of days before Christmas when most of these students were hit with the realization they would be spending the rest of their break in search of new homes for the next semester. Many of the fraternity members thought the letters were, at first, a joke. They said they couldn’t believe their house was going to be closed with no prior warning, or that anyone would kick them out of their home with only a few weeks to find new ones. They said they couldn’t believe this was happen ing after a semester without breaking any rules that warranted closing their house. But it wasn’t a joke. Many of the Kappa Sigma members moved into the residence halls. Others moved off campus. And some decided they wouldn’t return to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Whatever the results were for indi vidual members, the closing of Kappa Sigma proved to be more than an incon venience. And now that everyone sup posedly has a place to live for the rest of this school year, the challenge present ed to the men of Kappa Sigma is over. But the questions remain. And many of these students understandably want them answered. They want to know why their house was closed. They want to know why nobody bothered to tell them the clos ing was imminent. They want to know if they’ll ever get their house back. Whether the closing of Kappa Sigma was warranted or not is a question sub ject to debate, but the short notice and lack of explanation for the closure are, for the members of that fraternity, inex cusable. No matter what violations, techni calities or financial difficulties forced the closing of Kappa Sigma, the deci sion makers at the fraternity’s national headquarters acted inappropriately. And after having their home taken away and their fraternity closed, the men of Kappa Sigma at least deserve one thing: an apology. Haney’s VDEW --i _ ._.—. __ DN -S; LETTERS 1 Tt did m fans,! like Michi who s chamj m e revolved around what they did on the field. All Nebraska’s players could do was trash Michigan. I guess the class of Coach Osborne doesn’t show up in his players. But then again, Osborne left his first V string in long after the game was decided, so maybe it shows what Nebraska is all about. Yes, NU begged its way to a share, but when it comes to^ honor and class, A Michigan wins \ A m' hands down. Brian Stierie . Are you on dope? Dear die-hard Nebraska fans, I think it is great that you guys are HUGE fans and show such pride. Prick is something that is not seen on every campus. We are die select, the few and the privileged. Although you guys won a SHARE of the national championship, there are many rea sons you DO NOT deserve it. Can you please answer these questions? f —' " ■ If Coach Osborne was NOT retir ing, do you HONESTLY think you would have won the share of the title? If it’s yes, it is pretty pathetic ... con sidering Osborne was hyped up as if the incarna tion of Michael Jordan. How does a team that was down by 30 votes in the coaches poll, in a game where both teams won convinc ingly, switch places? Total absurdity. This has NEVER happened in the history of college football. This question bothers me the most. How does any coach rank Michigan seventh and ninth? If Coach Osborne was involved in this, he needs to see a psychiatrist or is smoking too much Nebraskan pot. Not to be vengeful, but that fact that Manning was injured, there are many other reasons why Michigan deserved both titles.
