Four teams battled for schlinging win SCHLING from page 1 showed us what engineering is all about,” freshman mechanical engi neering major Angel McMullen said. Distance, accuracy and practical ity decided the winner of Tuesday night’s contest. Each of the four designs had their chance to bombard the unsuspecting rugby team at the other end of the field. Two of the designs used varia tions on the compressed air propul sion system of the existing schlinger. One used a steel chamber to col lect the compressed air at the rear of a plastic barrel. The other also used a plastic tube for a barrel and another tube slung underneath to collect the compressed air. Rut thp ntliprhi/A \i/pi*p mnrp innn. vative. One design was an industrial slingshot powered by surgical rubber with a still tube to launch the hot dogs. The final design was simply a bow with a plunger arrow attached to a launch tube for the hot dog. The designs averaged $50 to $ 100 in cost, with the most expensive cost i ing about $300. The original Der Viener Schlinger cost between $2,000 and $10,000. At the competition, the two pneu matic designs tied for first place after shooting the dogs 77 and 80 yards down field. The original schlinger could only shoot the hot dog 47 yards, so both designs roughly doubled the distance. One oi the winning design teams, Josh Pinkelman, Jason Pope, Jeff Potter and Adam Pfeifer, used the Internet to plan their design. “It was a lot of fun working together to make our ideas work,” Pinkelman said. Now Fairbury will meet with the UNL faculty to determine which aspects of the two winning designs will be incorporated into the Fairbury schlinger to reach the upper deck. Everyone involved with the pro ject viewed it as a success. “The project taught creativity and that is the most difficult thing to teach,” Sicking said. Fairbury president Tom Roode was also pleased. “This is a great marketing tool for us,” he said.
