    Garth Brooks
“Sevens”
Capitol
Grade: A
When a song’s ambiguity leaves the
listener wondering if the singer’s talking
about his truck or his woman, you’ve
got pure country.
And with 20 No. 1 hits since his
debut album in 1989, Garth Brooks
shows he’s still got what it takes.
Though his latest album, “Sevens,”
released last week, has strayed a little
from his country roots, Brooks is still
am
singing straight from the heart
“Defining Garth is kind of tough,”
Brooks said at a Lincoln press confer
ence in September. “Garth is left field to
right field and even on out there.”
Unlike his first six albums, which
contained 10 songs each, Brooks busts out
14 tracks of new material on “Sevens,”
providing something for everyone.
“If they like the real traditional stuff,
then there’s more traditional stuff on
there,” Brooks said. “And the people
that do the other Garth stuff that some
times we classify like ‘The Dance’ or
‘Standing Outside the Fire,’ ‘We Shall
Be Free,’ there’s that stuff on there, too.”
For the pure country lover, “Sevens”
contains a handful of straight honky
tonkin’ songs such as “Cowboy
Cadillac,” in which Brooks explains his
love for a truck - or is it a woman? - and
“Longneck Bottle,” a swing-like tune
and the album’s first release.
“It’s a swing tune that isn’t swing,”
Brocks said “It’s got a straight beat instead
of a swing beat But itfc got a swing feel to
it. So we liked that because it’s different
from anything else we had cut”
Among the nontraditional country
sounding songs is “Two Pina Coladas,”
a tune that brings a Caribbean feel to an
everyday problem.
“It’s for a guy who just decided to
say, ‘Screw it. I’m going to disappear
and just drink myself into happiness,’”
Brooks said.
Brooks slows the tempo down in
most of the other songs, and the lyrics
really make them strong. Included is “In
Another’s Eyes,” a duet with Trisha
Yearwood.
To say the least “Sevens” is a little
different from anything Brooks has put
out but what the heck? It works.
“You’ve got extremely Garth and
you’ve got extremely Garth,” Brooks
said “but it’s always been left and right.”
